Procedure
(-)-α-Amino-4-hydroxy-3-(methoxymethyl)benzeneacetic acid methyl ester hydrochloride is dissolved in a minimum amount of methanol. To this solution is added methanolic potassium hydroxide until a basic reaction to phenolphthalein is observed. The potassium chloride which precipitates is removed and the solvent is removed under vacuum to give a quantitative yield of the title compound.
