Procedure
Using the procedure outlined in 14A, ethyl phenanthro[1,2-b]thiophene-2-carboxylate (H. G. Pars Pharmaceutical Laboratories, Inc.) gave a 98.0% yield of phenanthro[1,2-b]thiophene-2-methanol, mp 169°-170.5° (C,H,S), (CH2Cl2 /hexane).
