Participants
| Role | Name | HCID | Charge |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reactant | Butanal | HCID 261 | — |
| Reactant | Crotonaldehyde | HCID 447466 | — |
| Catalyst | Bismuth trichloride | HCID 24591 | — |
| Product | n-Butanal dicrotyl acetal | HCID 57271298 | 178.5% |
Reaction Steps
The general procedure of Example 2 was repeated except that 72 g (1 mole) of n-butanal and 2 mg of bismuth chloride were used instead of 70 g of crotonaldehyde and 3 mg of stannous chloride dihydrate, respectively to give 177.0 g of n-butanal dicrotyl acetal (R1 =an n-propyl group, R2 =a hydrogen atom and R3 =a crotyl group] (boiling point: 116° C./25 mmHg) (yield: 89.4%).
