Procedure

A mixture of 300 mg of ethyl 4-(1-hydroxy-1-methylethyl)-2-methylthiomethyl-1-{4-[2-(trityltetrazol-5-yl)phenyl]phenyl}methylimidazole-5-carboxylate [prepared as described in step (d) above] and 5 ml of a 25% v/v aqueous solution of acetic acid was stirred at 60° C. for 1 hour. At the end of this time, the resulting solution was mixed with 5 ml of water and cooled with ice. The trityl alcohol which appeared as crystals was filtered off, and the filtrate was concentrated by evaporation under reduced pressure. Acetic acid and water in the residue were removed by distillation as azeotropic mixtures with toluene, to give 217 mg of the title compound as an amorphous powder.
