Procedure

A mixture of ethyl 6-methyl-2-methoxybenzoate (8.4 g, 43.2 mmol), bromine (6.9 g, 43.2 mmol) and tetrachloromethane (170 ml) is stirred at room temperature for 60 hours. The reaction mixture is poured into water and extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic phase is separated and concentrated. The crude product is obtained as a yellow oil, 10.3 g (87%) and is used without further purification.
