Procedure

Mitsunobu coupling of phenol 58 with 4-methylbenzylalcohol followed by flash chromatography (5 to 30% EtOAc-hexanes gradient) gave 2-(3-(3-(4-methylbenzyloxy)phenyl)propyl)isoindoline-1,3-dione as a white waxy solid. Yield (2.6 g, 69%): 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3) δ 7.80 (dd, J=3.2 Hz, 2H), 7.67 (d, J=3.2 Hz, 2H), 7.32 (d, J=8.0 Hz, 2H), 7.16 (dd, J=8.0 Hz, 3H), 6.75-6.85 (m, 3H), 4.98 (s, 2H), 3.74 (t, J=8.0, 2H), 2.67 (t, J=8.0 Hz, 2H), 2.35 (s, 3H), 2.04 (dddd, J=8.0, 2H).
