· Highly toxic, may be fatal if inhaled, ingested or absorbed through skin.
A powerful irritant that can induce pulmonary edema; [HSDB] Reacts with water to release hydrochloric acid; [CAMEO] The liquid produces blisters after an exposure of less than one minute. Bleach may be used to decontaminate ethyldichloroarsine in closed spaces. In open areas, the substance decomposes rapidly without need for decontamination. [Sullivan, J.B. Jr., G.R. Krieger (eds.). Hazardous Materials Toxicology. Baltimore: Williams and Wilkins, 1992, p. 995]
If material involved in fire: Extinguish fire using agent suitable for type of surrounding fire. (Material itself does not burn or burns with difficulty.) Use water in flooding quantities as fog. Use foam, dry chemical, or carbon dioxide. /Arsenical cmpd, liquid, NOS/
Arsenic is absorbed mainly by inhalation or ingestion, as to a lesser extent, dermal exposure. It is then distributed throughout the body, where it is reduced into arsenite if necessary, then methylated into monomethylarsenic (MMA) and dimethylarsenic acid (DMA) by arsenite methyltransferase. Arsenic and its metabolites are primarily excreted in the urine. Arsenic is known to induce the metal-binding protein metallothionein, which decreases the toxic effects of arsenic and other metals by binding them and making them biologically inactive, as well as acting as an antioxidant. (L20)
Used as a chemical weapon; [HSDB]
Military poison gas
Ethyldichloroarsine belongs to the group of chemical warfare agents known as blister agents or vesicants. Due to its toxicity, it is nowadays considered obsolete. (L360)

ETHYLDICHLOROARSINE is a reducing agent. Reacts rapidly and dangerously with oxygen and with other oxidizing agents, even weak ones. Likely to ignite on contact with alcohols. Incompatible with acids, alcohols, amines, and aldehydes. May be ignited by heat, sparks or flames. May re-ignite after fire is extinguished.
· CALL 911. Then call emergency response telephone number on shipping paper. If shipping paper not available or no answer, refer to appropriate telephone number listed on the inside back cover.
· Do not touch damaged containers or spilled material unless wearing appropriate protective clothing.

General First Aid:
· Wear positive pressure self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).
TIH (Toxic Inhalation Hazard) - Term used to describe gases and volatile liquids that are toxic when inhaled. Some are TIH materials themselves, e.g., chlorine, and some release TIH gases when spilled in water, e.g., chlorosilanes. [ERG 2016].
If material on fire or involved in fire: Extinguish fire using agent suitable for type of surrounding fire. (Material itself does not burn or burns with difficulty.) Do not use water on material itself. Use dry chemical or carbon dioxide. Apply water from as far a distance as possible. Keep run-off water out of sewers and water sources.
Decontamination in closed spaces may be accomplished with bleach. No decontamination is needed in open areas as the substance decomposes rapidly.
Environmental considerations - water spill: Use natural barriers or oil spill control booms to limit spill travel. Remove trapped material with suction hoses.
Environmental considerations - land spill: Dig a pit, pond, lagoon, holding area to contain liquid or solid material. /SRP: If time permits, pits, ponds, lagoons, soak holes, or holding areas should be sealed with an impermeable flexible membrane liner./ Dike surface flow using soil, sand bags, foamed polyurethane, or foamed concrete.
SRP: At the time of review, criteria for land treatment or burial (sanitary landfill) disposal practices are subject to significant revision. Prior to implementing land disposal of waste residue (including waste sludge), consult with environmental regulatory agencies for guidance on acceptable disposal practices.
If material not on fire and not involved in fire: Keep material out of water sources and sewers. Build dikes to contain flow as necessary. Do not use water on material itself. Attempt to stop leak if without undue personnel hazard.
Personnel protection: Avoid breathing vapors. ... Do not handle broken packages unless wearing appropriate personal protective equipment. Wash away any material which may have contacted the body with copious amounts of water or soap and water. Avoid bodily contact with the material. Avoid breathing fumes from burning material.
For initial isolation and protective action distances for chemical warfare blister agents see the Chemical Warfare Agents table in the ERG Criminal or Terrorist Use of CBR Agents. (ERG, 2024)

Tolerances for total residues of combined arsenic (calculated as As) in food are established as follows: (a) In edible tissues & in eggs of chickens & turkeys: 0.5 ppm in uncooked muscle tissue; 2 ppm in uncooked edible by-products; & 0.5 ppm in eggs. (b) In edible tissues of swine: 2 ppm in uncooked liver & kidney; 0.5 ppm in uncooked muscle tissue & by-products other than liver & kidney. /Arsenic/
Arsenic poisoning can be treated by chelation therapy, using chelating agents such as dimercaprol, EDTA or DMSA. Charcoal tablets may also be used for less severe cases. In addition, maintaining a diet high in sulfur helps eliminate arsenic from the body. (L20)
Arsenic and its metabolites disrupt ATP production through several mechanisms. At the level of the citric acid cycle, arsenic inhibits pyruvate dehydrogenase and by competing with phosphate it uncouples oxidative phosphorylation, thus inhibiting energy-linked reduction of NAD+, mitochondrial respiration, and ATP synthesis. Hydrogen peroxide production is also increased, which might form reactive oxygen species and oxidative stress. Arsenic's carginogenicity is influenced by the arsenical binding of tubulin, which results in aneuploidy, polyploidy and mitotic arrests. The binding of other arsenic protein targets may also cause altered DNA repair enzyme activity, altered DNA methylation patterns and cell proliferation. (T1, A17)
... IS AN EXTREMELY POISONOUS LIQ WITH VAPOR THAT IS A POWERFUL LACRIMATORY IRRITANT OF THE EYES AND NOSE, ALSO VERY IRRITATING TO THE SKIN AND RESP TRACT. THE VAPOR IS SAID TO CAUSE NECROSIS OF CORNEAL EPITHELIUM.
HIGHLY TOXIC BY INGESTION, INHALATION, SKIN ABSORPTION. STRONG IRRITANT.
Ethyldichloroarsine (ED) produces a vapor harmful only on long exposure. The liquid form causes blisters with exposures of <1 min. Immediate irritation occurs with delayed formation of bullae. If liquid droplets are inhaled, pulmonary edema & respiratory damage may occur. Eye injury occurs on exposure.

Medial lethal dosage (MLD50): Inhalation - 3000 to 5000 mg/min/cu m, depending on the period of exposure. Since ethyldichloroarsine is detoxified by the body at an appreciable rate, the product of concn and time is not a constant. As time increases, "concn" does not decrease proportionately. /from table/
Median temporarily incapacitating dosage (ICt50) by inhalation - 5 to 10 mg/min/cu m /from table/

For the maximum protection of human health from the potential carcinogenic effects due to exposure of arsenic through ingestion of contaminated water & contaminated aquatic organisms, the ambient water concn should be zero based on the nonthreshold assumption for this chemical. However, zero level may not be attainable at the present time. Therefore, the levels which may result in incremental increase of cancer risk over the lifetime are estimated at 1X10-5, 1X10-6, & 1X10-7. The corresponding criteria are 22 ng/l, 2.2 ng/l, & .22 ng/l, respectively .... For consumption of aquatic organisms only, excluding consumption of water, the levels are 175 ng/ml, 17.5 ng/l, & 1.75 ng/l, respectively. /Arsenic/
