用途もっぱら溶媒として使用され、工業的にはアクリル繊維（ポリアクリルニトリル）の合成と湿式紡績の溶媒として大量に利用される。また、石油化学工業で脂式炭化水素から芳香族化合物を抽出したり、アセチレン、ブタジエンを留分から分離する抽出溶媒としても利用されている。 DMFは100度以上の高温でゆっくりと分解し、ジメチルアミンを放出する。このため高温での反応には他の溶媒を検討すべきである。

使用N,N-Diethylformamide is used in the synthesis of metal-organic frameworks and Diethyltrifluoromethylamine. It is also used as solvent in the preparation of porous cubic-shaped zinc oxide particles. It is involved in the preparation of quinazoline-2,4(1H,3H)-dione by reacting with o-aminonitrile.

一般的な説明N,N-Diethylformamide undergoes condensation with aromatic o-aminonitriles in the presence of ZnCl2 in sealed reactor to yield quinazoline-2,4(1H,3H)-dione.
