Disposal Methods
SRP: The most favorable course of action is to use an alternative chemical product with less inherent propensity for occupational exposure or environmental contamination. Recycle any unused portion of the material for its approved use or return it to the manufacturer or supplier. Ultimate disposal of the chemical must consider: the material's impact on air quality; potential migration in soil or water; effects on animal, aquatic, and plant life; and conformance with environmental and public health regulations.
Preventive Measures
SRP: The scientific literature for the use of contact lenses in industry is conflicting. The benefit or detrimental effects of wearing contact lenses depend not only upon the substance, but also on factors including the form of the substance, characteristics and duration of the exposure, the uses of other eye protection equipment, and the hygiene of the lenses. However, there may be individual substances whose irritating or corrosive properties are such that the wearing of contact lenses would be harmful to the eye. In those specific cases, contact lenses should not be worn. In any event, the usual eye protection equipment should be worn even when contact lenses are in place.

Environmental Fate
TERRESTRIAL FATE: Based on a classification scheme(1), an estimated Koc value of 1.0(SRC), determined from a structure estimation method(2), indicates that 2-methoxy-1-propanol is expected to have very high mobility in soil(SRC). Volatilization of 2-methoxy-1-propanol from moist soil surfaces is not expected to be an important fate process(SRC) given an estimated Henry's Law constant of 1.8X10-8 atm-cu m/mole(SRC), using a fragment constant estimation method(3). 2-Methoxy-1-propanol is expected to volatilize from dry soil surfaces(SRC) based upon an estimated vapor pressure of 4.08 mm Hg(SRC), determined from a fragment constant method(4). Biodegradation data for 2-methoxy-1-propanol were not available(SRC, 2009).
AQUATIC FATE: Based on a classification scheme(1), an estimated Koc value of 1.0(SRC), determined from a structure estimation method(2), indicates that 2-methoxy-1-propanol is not expected to adsorb to suspended solids and sediment(SRC). Volatilization from water surfaces is not expected(3) based upon an estimated Henry's Law constant of 1.8X10-8 atm-cu m/mole(SRC), developed using a fragment constant estimation method(4). According to a classification scheme(5), an estimated BCF of 3.2(SRC), from an estimated log Kow of -0.49(6) and a regression-derived equation(7), suggests the potential for bioconcentration in aquatic organisms is low(SRC). Biodegradation data for 2-methoxy-1-propanol were not available(SRC, 2009).
ATMOSPHERIC FATE: According to a model of gas/particle partitioning of semivolatile organic compounds in the atmosphere(1), 2-methoxy-1-propanol, which has an estimated vapor pressure of 4.08 mm Hg at 25 °C(SRC) determined from a fragment constant method(2), is expected to exist solely as a vapor in the ambient atmosphere. Vapor-phase 2-methoxy-1-propanol is degraded in the atmosphere by reaction with photochemically-produced hydroxyl radicals(SRC); the half-life for this reaction in air is estimated to be 6.5 hours(SRC), calculated from its rate constant of 2.0X10-11 cu cm/molecule-sec at 25 °C(SRC) that was derived using a structure estimation method(3). 2-Methoxy-1-propanol does not contain chromophores that absorb at wavelengths >290 nm(4) and therefore is not expected to be susceptible to direct photolysis by sunlight(SRC). However, the structurally similar alpha isomer 1-methoxy-2-hydroxypropane underwent direct photolysis under reflector sunlamps and ultraviolet light leaving only 50% after 3 hours(5).
Medical Surveillance
... Assessing exposure to technical grade 1-alkoxy-2-propanol acetates through the biological monitoring of urinary 2-alkoxypropionic acids has been found to be the most accurate method. The method developed in this study provides a procedure for the simultaneous urinalysis of methoxyacetic acid (MAA), ethoxyacetic acid (EAA), butoxyacetic acid (BAA), oxalic acid (OA), 2-methoxypropionic acid (2-MPA) and 2-ethoxypropionic acid (2-EPA). This possibility is very valuable in workplaces where workers are exposed simultaneously to different glycol ethers. This study was conducted among 54 silkscreen printers, who gave a urine sample to be analysed using a capillary gas chromatograph for 2-MPA and 2-EPA. The mean urinary concentrations of 2-MPA and 2-EPA were 1.27 (S.D. = 1.60) nmol/mol creatinine (median = 0.53, n = 26) and 1.23 (S.D. = 2.31) mmol/mol creatinine (median = 0.26, n = 39), respectively. The urinary excretion of 2-MPA and 2-EPA immediately after shift was linearly dependent on the preceding technical grade 1-methoxy-2-proponol acetate (7 = 0.16x + 0.26, n = 26 R2 = 0.78) and technical grade 1-ethoxy-2-propanol acetate (y = 2.05x - 0.09, n = 39, R2 = 0.68) respective exposure, as measured in the workers' breathing zone. According to the results of this study it is possible to monitor exposure to the technical grade 1-methoxy-2-propanol acetate and technical grade 1-ethoxy-2-propanol acetate through urinalysis of 2-MPA and 2-EPA. /1-Methoxy-2-proponol acetate/

Artificial Pollution Sources
2-Methoxy-1-propanol's production as a byproduct during the synthesis of 1-methoxy-2-hydroxypropane (DOWANOL PM) and its potential presence in products manufactured using 1-methoxy-2-hydroxypropane(1-3) may result in its release to the environment through various waste streams(SRC).
2-Methoxy-1-propanol has been shown to be present in the commercial solvent DOWANOL PM as an impurity at a maximum level of 3%. Other analyses have determined 2-methoxy-1-propanol concentrations by GC/MS to be present at a level of 1.8% in DOWANOL(2).
Environmental Bioconcentration
An estimated BCF of 3.2 was calculated for 2-methoxy-1-propanol(SRC), using an estimated log Kow of -0.49(1) and a regression-derived equation(2). According to a classification scheme(3), this BCF suggests the potential for bioconcentration in aquatic organisms is low(SRC).
Volatilization from Water/Soil
The Henry's Law constant for 2-methoxy-1-propanol is estimated as 1.8X10-8 atm-cu m/mole(SRC) using a fragment constant estimation method(1). This Henry's Law constant indicates that 2-methoxy-1-propanol is expected to be essentially nonvolatile from water surfaces(2). 2-Methoxy-1-propanol's Henry's Law constant indicates that volatilization from moist soil surfaces will not occur(SRC). 2-Methoxy-1-propanol is expected to volatilize from dry soil surfaces(SRC) based upon an estimated vapor pressure of 4.08 mm Hg(SRC), determined from a fragment constant method(3).
Non-Human Toxicity Excerpts
/LABORATORY ANIMALS: Subchronic or Prechronic Exposure/ Wistar rats were exposed to 2-methoxypropylacetate-1 (2-MPAc-1) vapors in concentrations of 0, 110, 560 and 2800 ppm for (equiv. to 0; 0.6; 3.0 and 14.9 mg/L) for 4 weeks in chambers (6 hours/day; 5 days/week; five male and five female animals per group). The top concentration was equivalent to a 95% vapor saturation at 20 °C and the animals reacted to this with a moderate respiratory irritation during the 6 hours exposure times; at 560 ppm these effects were only slight. The top dose was also associated with a significantly reduced body weight development and some hematologic and biochemical alterations of little specificity. The most prominent effect was thymic atrophy. No effects were noted on the testes or on the cellularity in blood or bone marrow. 560 ppm were without systemic effects. Furthermore, 2-methoxypropanol-1 (2-MP-1), 2-MPAc-1 and 2-ethoxyethanol (EE) were administered in parallel by gavage to groups of five male Wistar rats daily for 10 days at near equimolar dose levels (1800, 2600 and 1800 mg/kg per day, respectively). At the end of the administration period the testes were investigated. There was a pronounced testicular atrophy in animals exposed to EE, whereas no adverse effects were observed with 2-MP-1 and 2-MPAc-1. The results of these studies indicate that 2-MP-1 and 2-MPAc-1 which previously had been shown to exert pronounced prenatal toxicity in rabbits and weak prenatal effects in rats are devoid of other forms of systemic toxicity in rats that are typically observed with ethoxyethanol and methoxyethanol.
/LABORATORY ANIMALS: Developmental or Reproductive Toxicity/ 2-Methoxypropanol-1 was investigated for prenatal toxicity in Himalayan rabbits after inhalation exposure to 0, 145, 225, 350, and 545 ppm for 6 hr/day from Gestation Day 6 through 18. Maternally toxic effects were found with decreased body weights from Day 12 of gestation through the end of the study at 545 ppm. A dose-dependent increase of resorptions, fetal malformations, and variations was observed at 225, 350, and 545 ppm, whereas 145 ppm was devoid of exposure-related effects. The malformation rate at 545 ppm was 100%. The types of malformations mainly consisted of absent phalanges and absent or rudimentary metatarsal bones, malformed ribs, and a unique enlargement of sternebrae. The effects are very similar to those previously found with 2-methoxypropyl-acetate-1. The results of this study may have implications for the quantitative estimation of risks associated with 2-methoxy-propanol-1 impurities in the widely used isomer 1-methoxypropanol-2 which itself does not show developmental toxicity.
/ALTERNATIVE and IN VITRO TESTS/ The cytotoxicities of several glycol ethers and some of their oxidation products were compared in Chinese-hamster ovary (CHO) cells. ... Test materials used were methoxyethanol, ethoxyethanol, butoxyethanol, 2-methoxypropanol-1, 1-methoxypropanol-2, 1-methoxy-n-butanol-2, 1-methoxy-tert-butanol, methoxyacetic-acid, ethoxyacetic-acid, butoxyacetic-acid and 2-methoxypropionic-acid. Butoxyethanol was the most cytotoxic compound tested and 1-methoxy-tert-butanol was close in cytotoxicity. Methoxyethanol was the least toxic. Methoxyacetic-acid and ethoxyacetic-acid were found to be more cytotoxic than their precursor products. The authors conclude that gross cytotoxicity to dividing cells caused by glycol ethers is not the predominant mechanism for their teratogenicity.
Environmental Abiotic Degradation
The rate constant for the vapor-phase reaction of 2-methoxy-1-propanol with photochemically-produced hydroxyl radicals has been estimated as 2.0X10-11 cu cm/molecule-sec at 25 °C(SRC) using a structure estimation method(1). This corresponds to an atmospheric half-life of about 6.5 hours at an atmospheric concentration of 5X10+5 hydroxyl radicals per cu cm(1). 2-Methoxy-1-propanol is not expected to undergo hydrolysis in the environment due to the lack of functional groups that hydrolyze under environmental conditions(2). 2-Methoxy-1-propanol does not contain chromophores that absorb at wavelengths >290 nm(2) and therefore is not expected to be susceptible to direct photolysis by sunlight(SRC). However, the structurally similar alpha isomer 1-methoxy-2-hydroxypropane underwent direct photolysis under reflector sunlamps and ultraviolet light leaving only 50% after 3 hours(3).
