解説ニオブ酸リチウムはニオブの酸化物であるとの酸化物である酸化リチウムの混合物で、リチウムナイオベートや酸化ニオブリチウムなどの名前で呼ばれることもあります。ニオブ酸リチウムは天然には存在しません。ニオブ酸リチウムは常温では無臭の個体で、水に不溶です。 ニオブ酸リチウムの結晶を成長させる方法はチョクラルスキー法と呼ばれ、成長した結晶は様々な断面で切断されて使用されます。圧電性や非線形光学効果を持つことが知られています。

使用It is employed in the manufacture of optical waveguides and surface acoustic wave devices, Lithium niobate (CAS NO.12031-63-9) is used extensively in the telecoms market, e.g. in mobile telephones and optical modulators. It can also find its uses in laser frequency doubling, nonlinear optics, Pockels cells, optical parametric oscillators, Q-switching devices for lasers, other acousto-optic devices, optical switches for gigahertz frequencies.

使用用途ニオブ酸リチウムは圧力を加えることで圧力に比例した表面電極が現れる圧電性や、非常に強い光との相互作用によって起きる光の強さに依存しない反応である非線形光学効果などの特性を持ちます。 これらの特性を持つことから、ニオブ酸リチウムは携帯電話や電気工学変調器、共振器などの製造に使われます。特に、と一緒に携帯電話などの身近な電子機器に搭載されるSAWデバイスの製造に使われることが多いです。SAWデバイスには通信機器の音声データのノイズを除去するなどがあります。
