All forms of exposure to this compound are hazardous. Acute systemic mercurialism may be fatal within a few minutes; death by uremic poisoning is usually delayed 5-12 days. Acute poisoning has resulted from inhaling dust concentrations of 1.2-8.5 mg/m 3 of air; symptoms include tightness and pain in chest, coughing, and difficulty in breathing. Ingestion causes necrosis, pain, vomiting, and severe purging. Contact with eyes causes ulceration of conjunctiv a and cornea. Contact with skin causes irritation and possible dermatitis; systemic poisoning can occur by absorption through skin. (USCG, 1999)

Mercury is absorbed mainly via ingestion and inhalation, then distributed throughout the body via the bloodstream, where a portion binds to sulfhydryl groups on haemoglobin. Mercury can undergo oxidation to mercuric mercury, which takes place via the catalase-hydrogen peroxide pathway. The mercury atom is able to diffuse down the cleft in the catalase enzyme to reach the active site where the heme ring is located. Oxidation most likely occurs in all tissue, as the catalase hydrogen peroxide pathway is ubiquitous. Following oxidation, mercury tends to accumulate in the kidneys. Mercury is excreted mainly by exhalation and in the faeces. (A6, L7)

Mercury spills should be cleaned up immediately by use of a special vacuum cleaner. Then the area should be washed with a dilute calcium sulfide solution. Small quantities of mercury can be picked up by mixing with copper metal granules. ... /Mercury/

Mercury removal from waste water can be accomplished by these processes: BMS process; Chlorine is added to the waste water, oxidizing any mercury present to the ionic state. The BMS adsorbent (an activated carbon concentrate of sulfur cmpd on its surface) is used to collect ionic mercury. The spent adsorbent is then distilled to recover the mercury, leaving a carbon residue for reuse or disposal. TMR IMAC Process; Waste water is fed into a reactor, whereby a slight excess of chlorine is maintained, oxidizing any mercury present to ionic mercury. The liquid is then passed through the TMR IMAC ion-exchange resin where mercury ions are adsorbed. The mercury is then stripped from the spent resin with hydrochloric acid solution. /Mercury cmpds/

SPILLED MERCURY CMPD OR SOLN CAN BE CLEANED UP BY ANY METHOD THAT DOES NOT CAUSE EXCESSIVE AIRBORNE CONTAMINATION OR SKIN CONTACT. /MERCURY COMPOUNDS/

1) Ventilate area of spill. 2) Collect spilled material for reclamation using commercially available mercury vapor depressants or specialized vacuum cleaners. /Inorganic mercury/

Mercury mainly affects the nervous system. Exposure to high levels of metallic, inorganic, or organic mercury can permanently damage the brain, kidneys, and developing fetus. Effects on brain functioning may result in irritability, shyness, tremors, changes in vision or hearing, and memory problems. Acrodynia, a type of mercury poisoning in children, is characterized by pain and pink discoloration of the hands and feet. Mercury poisoning can also cause Hunter-Russell syndrome and Minamata disease. (L7)

Toxicity Summary · 1 件

High-affinity binding of the divalent mercuric ion to thiol or sulfhydryl groups of proteins is believed to be the major mechanism for the activity of mercury. Through alterations in intracellular thiol status, mercury can promote oxidative stress, lipid peroxidation, mitochondrial dysfunction, and changes in heme metabolism. Mercury is known to bind to microsomal and mitochondrial enzymes, resulting in cell injury and death. For example, mercury is known to inhibit aquaporins, halting water flow across the cell membrane. It also inhibits the protein LCK, which causes decreased T-cell signalling and immune system depression. Mercury is also believed to inhibit neuronal excitability by acting on the postsynaptic neuronal membrane. It also affects the nervous system by inhibiting protein kinase C and alkaline phosphatase, which impairs brain microvascular formation and function, as well as alters the blood-brain barrier. Mercury also produces an autoimmune response, likely by modification of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II molecules, self peptides, T-cell receptors, or cell-surface adhesion molecules. (L7, A8, A25, A26)

Signs and SymptomsCommon symptoms include peripheral neuropathy (presenting as paresthesia or itching, burning or pain), skin discoloration (pink cheeks, fingertips and toes), edema (swelling), and desquamation (dead skin peels off in layers). (A5)
Human Toxicity Excerpts · 1 件

A 31 year old inhabitant of French Guiana was prescribed mercuric iodide per os for a half month. Shortly before the end of the treatment he developed fasciculations in the trunk and particularly the lower limb muscles, distal painful paresthesias with vasomotor disorders, episodes of excessive perspiration and palmoplantar erythema, moderate fluctuating hypertension, progressive loss of weight and irritability with insomnia. Clinical and electrical signs of neuropathy were lacking. The clinical picture was that of Morvan's fibrillary chorea with acrodynia, the conditions of onset strongly suggesting a mercurial intoxication. Blood and particularly urine mercury levels were elevated. Administration of dimercaprol considerably increased urinary excretion of mercury and there was progressive improvement and finally recovery after two months of dimercaprol treatment.

MERCURIC IODIDE INJECTED INTO ANTERIOR CHAMBER OF RABBITS HAS CAUSED PURULENT EXUDATION AND INFLAMMATION.

DOGS & CATS ARE PARTICULARLY SUSCEPTIBLE TO TOXIC EFFECTS OF HG FROM MERCURIAL OINTMENTS, BOTH DUE TO DIRECT ABSORPTION & LICKING OF PARTS TO WHICH OINTMENT HAS BEEN APPLIED. POISONING IN CATTLE HAS ALSO BEEN RECORDED AFTER USE OF OINTMENTS CONTAINING ... MERCURIC IODIDE ...

Mercuric iodide (HgI2), mercuric chloride (HgCl2) ... were administered via stomach to males and females (1-20 days of pregnancy) to study the toxic effects on the male gonads and embryogenesis, respectively. In the second series, mercury (Hg) salts were given to male rats daily for 2 mo. All the cmpd were markedly embryotoxic and the severity depended on the dose and the intake schedule. ... HgI2 was more toxic than HgCl2. These materials characteristically decr the size of the placenta. They showed no teratogenic activity. The embryolethal effect of HgI2 (1/8 LD50) was most pronounced when it was administered during 1-4 days of pregnancy. The embryo deaths were not practically any different from the control if HgI2 was administered on other days. Thus, these Hg cmpd are sufficiently effective with reference to intrauterine development (cause embryo death but show no teratogenicity), whereas the embryolethal effect is most evident during the initial stage of embryogenesis.

Among mercuric iodide, mercuric chloride, and mercuric ammonium chloride, the acute toxic concn to monolayer cell cultures (Hepl-2, Vero and amnion) was the lowest for mercuric iodide (HgI2) (cell degeneration), followed by that of mercuric chloride (HgCl2). The Hg(II) compounds belonged to class II type materials (highly toxic). The sensitivity of the cell lines to the Hg was practically similar; only human amnion cells were somewhat more sensitive than the remaining ones. The Hg inhibited the cell growth and multiplication and the max effect was observed by 48 hr. The investigated cmpd inhibited monoamine oxidase activity in the hepatic mitochondria at 10-2M.
