解説セレノシステイン，C3H7NO2Se(168.06)．システインのSがセレンSe(周期表でSと同族)で置き換わったアミノ酸．通常のアミノ酸20種類に加え，21番目の天然アミノ酸といわれる．セレノシステインを活性中心にもつ酵素は，最初原始的な単細胞生物Archaeaで見つかったが，その後，ほ乳動物でも見いだされている．終止コドンのUGAが転用され，セレノシステインのコドンとして使われている．
