化学的特性
Methamidophos is a colourless crystalline solid with a pungent odour. It is readily soluble in water, alcohols, ketones, and aliphatic chlorinated hydrocarbons but sparingly soluble in ether and practically insoluble in petroleum ether. Methamidophos is also a breakdown product of another OP, namely, acephate. Methamidophos is slightly corrosive to mild steel and copper alloys.

解説
有機リン系殺虫剤。1964年、ドイツのバイエル社で開発された。無色の針状結晶で、水、アルコールに溶けやすく、メルカプタン様の腐敗臭があり、目を刺激する。工業的には68～70％以上の黄色の粘稠(ねんちゅう)液として製造され、農薬として30～50％水溶液または3％粒剤がある。 日本では農薬の登録はなく、農薬取締法に基づき製造、輸入、使用が禁止されている。アメリカ、カナダ、オーストラリア、EUなどでは野菜、果物などの殺虫剤、ダニ駆除剤として特定の品目について使用が認められている。 中国では2008年1月から輸出向け製品への使用を含めて有機リン系殺虫剤の生産、流通および使用を禁止したが、日本に輸出した冷凍食品から同年（平成20）1月本剤が検出され、健康被害事例があって問題となった。 メタミドホスは、経口的曝露(ばくろ)の場合速やかに吸収され各臓器に移行するが、蓄積の可能性はなく、速やかに代謝され糞便および呼気により排泄される。中毒症状としては縮瞳(しゅくどう)、分泌物の亢進(こうしん)、筋線維性攣縮(れんしゅく)などで、危険な症状には呼吸不全や意識障害がある。［幸保文治］[参照項目] | バイエル | メルカプタン小学館 日本大百科全書(ニッポニカ) ）

使用用途
メタミドホスは、昆虫を殺すために農作物に使用される有機リン系殺虫剤や殺ダニ剤としての用途が知られています。神経伝達物質であるアセチルコリンを分解する酵素アセチルコリンエステラーゼの活性を阻害することにより、分解されずに過剰となったアセチルコリンが神経に作用し、殺虫効果を示します。 国外では使用されており、国内登録農薬であるアセフェートの加水分解物としてメタミドホスが生成することから、日本においてもポジティブリスト制度やコーデックス委員会 (WHO/FAO 合同食品規格委員会) の基準を参考に残留基準が設定されています。 日本でのメタミドホスの残留基準値は品目によって異なりますが、0.01 ppm～1 ppm以下です。
