解説DL-アラビノースは，ペントース尿症患者の尿中に遊離状態で存在する．融点164 ℃．炭素数5の単糖の一種。単糖とはヒドロキシ基-OHを2個以上と、アルデヒド基（-CHO）あるいはケトン基（-CO-）のいずれかをもつ化合物である（アルデヒド基とケトン基をまとめてカルボニル基とよぶ）。アルデヒド基をもつ糖をアルドース、ケトン基をもつ糖をケトースと総称する。また、糖類は炭素の数によっても分類され、炭素5個のものをペントース（五炭糖）、6個のものをヘキソース（六炭糖）と総称する。アラビノースはアルドペントース（アルデヒド基をもつ五炭糖）の一種である。組成式はC5H10O5、分子量は150.13。

使用DL-Arabinose is used in physicochemical studies to measure properties such as dielectric relaxation. It may be used in chiral separation of sugars. DL-Arabinose, is a building block of polysaccharide (CCPa-1) from fungus Coprinus comatus Gray, which has potential application as natural antitumor agent with immunomodulatory activity. Arabinose is also used as a culture medium for certain bacteria.
