SRP: At the time of review, criteria for land treatment or burial (sanitary landfill) disposal practices are subject to significant revision. Prior to implementing land disposal of waste residue (including waste sludge), consult with environmental regulatory agencies for guidance on acceptable disposal practices.

/LABORATORY ANIMALS: Chronic Exposure or Carcinogenicity/ Fifty 6-8 wk old female ICR/Ha Swiss mice were administered 1 mg 1,2-bis(chloromethoxy)ethane in 0.1 ml cyclohexane on the dorsal skin thrice weekly for up to 502 days, at which time more than half the animals were still alive. Four mice developed skin papillomas, the first of which appeared after 320 days, and 4 animals had local squamous-cell carcinomas (p<0.05). In 50 control mice treated with cyclohexane only, the median survival time was >504 days; no tumors occurred at the site of administration.
/LABORATORY ANIMALS: Chronic Exposure or Carcinogenicity/ Fifty 6-8 wk old female ICR/Ha Swiss mice were given weekly sc injections of 0.3 mg 1,2-bis(chloromethoxy)ethane in 0.05 ml tricaprylin. The test lasted 569 days, and the median survival time of treated mice was 362 days. Nine mice had local sarcomas (p<0.01). In 50 control animals treated with tricaprylin alone, the median survival time was 436 days; no local malignant tumors occurred.
/LABORATORY ANIMALS: Chronic Exposure or Carcinogenicity/ Thirty 6-8 wk old female ICR/Ha Swiss mice were given weekly ip injections of 0.3 mg 1,2-bis(chloromethoxy)ethane in 0.05 ml tricaprylin. The test lasted 546 days, and the median survival time of treated mice was 481 days. Two mice developed undifferentiated malignant tumors at the injection site, and 2 had local sarcomas (p<0.05). In 30 controls treated with tricaprylin alone, the median survival time was 513 days; no local malignant tumors occurred.
A research chemical that has been tested for use in textiles (wrinkle-resistance and dyeing), rubber (stabilizer),epoxy resins (curing agent), lithographic plates (light-sensitive polymers), and ion exchange resins; [HSDB]
Plastic Composites Manufacturing [Category: Industry]
Although 1,2-bis(chloromethoxy)ethane does not appear to have been used commercially, it has been investigated for potential commercial use on cellulosic textiles for imparting crease resistance; improving wet strength and facilitating dyeing; as a stabilizer for vulcanized rubbers; as a curing agent for epoxy resins; in the preparation of light-sensitive polymers for lithographic plates; and in the synthesis of ion-exchange resins.

Evaluation: No epidemiological data relevant to the carcinogenicity of 1,2-bis(chloromethoxy)ethane were available. There is limited evidence in experimental animals for the carcinogenicity of 1,2-bis(chloromethoxy)ethane. Overall Evaluation: 1,2-Bis(chloromethoxy)ethane is not classifiable as to its carcinogenicity to humans (Group 3).
Basic treatment: Establish a patent airway. Suction if necessary. Watch for signs of respiratory insufficiency and assist ventilations if needed. Administer oxygen by nonrebreather mask at 10 to 15 L/min. Monitor for pulmonary edema and treat if necessary ... . Monitor for shock and treat if necessary ... . Anticipate seizures and treat if necessary ... . For eye contamination, flush eyes immediately with water. Irrigate each eye continuously with normal saline during transport ... . Do not use emetics. For ingestion, rinse mouth and administer 5 ml/kg up to 200 ml of water for dilution if the patient can swallow, has a strong gag reflex, and does not drool ... . Cover skin burns with dry sterile dressings after decontamination ... . /Poison A and B/
Advanced treatment: Consider orotracheal or nasotracheal intubation for airway control in the patient who is unconscious, has severe pulmonary edema, or is in respiratory arrest. Positive pressure ventilation techniques with a bag valve mask device may be beneficial. Monitor cardiac rhythm and treat arrhythmias as necessary ... . Start an IV with D5W /SRP: "To keep open", minimal flow rate/. Use lactated Ringer's if signs of hypovolemia are present. Watch for signs of fluid overload. Consider drug therapy for pulmonary edema ... . For hypotension with signs of hypovolemia, administer fluid cautiously. Watch for signs of fluid overload ... . Treat seizures with diazepam (Valium) ... . Use proparacaine hydrochloride to assist eye irrigation ... . /Poison A and B/
