7787-32-8[Ba+2].[F-].[F-]OYLGJCQECKOTOL-UHFFFAOYSA-LBarium fluoride is a fluoride of barium that occurs naturally as the mineral frankdicksonite. It is used to make optical components such as lenses, in to production of welding agents, and in aluminum refining. Barium fluoride can also be used as a scintillator for the detection of X-rays and gamma rays. Barium is a metallic alkaline earth metal with the symbol Ba, and atomic number 56. It never occurs in nature in its pure form due to its reactivity with air, but combines with other chemicals such as sulfur or carbon and oxygen to form barium compounds that may be found as minerals. Acute Tox. 4 (92.1%)
Acute toxicity (Oral) - Category 3
Acute toxicity (Oral) - Category 3
Barium compounds are absorbed via ingestion and inhalation, the extent of which depends on the individual compound. In the body, the majority of the barium is found in the bone, while small amounts exists in the muscle, adipose, skin, and connective tissue. Barium is not metabolized in the body, but it may be transported or incorporated into complexes or tissues. Barium is excreted in the urine and faeces. (L214)

The health effects of the different barium compounds depend on how well the compound dissolves in water or the stomach contents. At low doses, barium acts as a muscle stimulant, while higher doses affect the nervous system, causing cardiac irregularities, tremors, weakness, anxiety, dyspnea, paralysisand possibly death. Barium may also cause gastrointestinal disturbances, damage the kidneys and cause decreases in body weight. (L214)
Barium is a competitive potassium channel antagonist that blocks the passive efflux of intracellular potassium, resulting in a shift of potassium from extracellular to intracellular compartments. The intracellular translocation of potassium results in a decreased resting membrane potential, making the muscle fibers electrically unexcitable and causing paralysis. Some of these barium's effects may also be due to barium induced neuromuscular blockade and membrane depolarization. (L214)
Ingesting excess barium may cause vomiting, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, difficulties in breathing, increased or decreased blood pressure, numbness around the face, and muscle weakness. High levels may result in changes in heart rhythm or paralysis and possibly death. (L214)

説明Barium fluoride appears as colourless, odourless crystals/white powder and is slightly soluble in water but soluble in ethanol and methanol. When heated, barium fluoride decomposes and emits toxic fumes of fluorine and barium. Barium fluoride is used as a preopacifying agent and in enamel and glazing frits production. Its other use is in the production of welding agents (an additive to some fluxes, a component of coatings for welding rods and in welding powders). It is also used in metallurgy as a molten bath for refining aluminium.
使用Barium Fluoride is used in ceramic flux, carbon brushes for electrical equipment, glass making, in the manufacture of other fluorides, crystals for spectroscopy, electronics and dry-film lubricants. Barium Fluoride is used in spectroscopic components. Barium Fluoride is often suitable for applications in the passive IR band (8 to 14 m) and is often used as a viewport window for thermography.
Wash it well with distilled H2O and dry it in a vacuum. Its solubility in H2O is 1.6g (10o), 1.6g (20o) and 1.62g (30o) per L, and is soluble in mineral acids and aqueous NH4Cl. It may be stored in glass bottles. [Kwasnik in Handbook of Preparative Inorganic Chemistry (Ed. Brauer) Academic Press Vol I p 234 1963.]
