Cosmetics product ingredient: 2,4-Hexadienal (89% trans, trans isomer; 11% cis, trans isomer);Source: 2,4-hexadienal is produced when oils are oxidized. Cooking, storing, or plant or animal metabolism of oils can cause oxidation. Peppermint oil, which is used to flavor cosmetic products such as toothpaste, is a natural source of 2,4-hexadienal. 2,4-hexadienal is added to cosmetics as fragrance and is added to food to enhance flavor. Trans and cis refer to the structure of the molecule. Different isomers have the same chemical formula, but may be arranged differently. Different isomers may have very different health impacts.;Potential health impacts: Humans are mainly exposed to 2,4-hexadienal by ingestion. Studies of rats and mice fed 2,4-hexadienal (89% trans, trans isomer and 11% cis, trans isomer) found increased rates of stomach and tongue cancer. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the European Commission permit the use of the trans, trans isomer of 2,4-hexadienal for use as a food additive. However, the National Toxicology Program (NTP) considers 2,4-hexadienal (89% trans, trans isomer and 11% cis, trans isomer) an animal carcinogen. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) categorizes 2,4-hexadienal (unspecified isomer) as a possible human carcinogen.;Product count: 6

SRP: The most favorable course of action is to use an alternative chemical product with less inherent propensity for occupational exposure or environmental contamination. Recycle any unused portion of the material for its approved use or return it to the manufacturer or supplier. Ultimate disposal of the chemical must consider: the material's impact on air quality; potential migration in soil or water; effects on animal, aquatic, and plant life; and conformance with environmental and public health regulations.

Environmental Fate · 3 件

TERRESTRIAL FATE: Based on a classification scheme(1), an estimated Koc value of 17(SRC), determined from a structure estimation method(2), indicates that 2,4-hexadienal is expected to have very high mobility in soil(SRC). Volatilization of 2,4-hexadienal from moist soil surfaces may be an important fate process(SRC) given a Henry's Law constant of 9.78X10-6 atm-cu m/mole(3). The potential for volatilization of 2,4-hexadienal from dry soil surfaces may exist based upon an estimated vapor pressure of 4.8 mm Hg(SRC), determined from a fragment constant method(4).

AQUATIC FATE: Based on a classification scheme(1), an estimated Koc value of 17(SRC), determined from a structure estimation method(2), indicates that 2,4-hexadienal is not expected to adsorb to suspended solids and sediment(SRC). Volatilization from water surfaces may be expected(3) based upon a Henry's Law constant of 9.78X10-6 atm-cu m/mole(4). Using this Henry's Law constant and an estimation method(3), volatilization half-lives for a model river and model lake are 3.8 and 30.6 days, respectively(SRC). According to a classification scheme(5), an estimated BCF of 2(SRC), from an estimated log Kow of 1.37(6) and a regression-derived equation(7), suggests the potential for bioconcentration in aquatic organisms is low.

ATMOSPHERIC FATE: According to a model of gas/particle partitioning of semivolatile organic compounds in the atmosphere(1), 2,4-hexadienal, which has an estimated vapor pressure of 4.8 mm Hg at 25 °C(SRC), determined from a fragment constant method(2), is expected to exist solely as a vapor. Vapor-phase 2,4-hexadienal is degraded in the atmosphere by reaction with photochemically-produced hydroxyl radicals(SRC); the half-life for this reaction in air is estimated to be 5.9 hours(SRC), calculated from its rate constant of 6.5X10-11 cu cm/molecule-sec at 25 °C(SRC) that was derived using a structure estimation method(3). The rate constant for the vapor-phase reaction of 2,4-hexadienal with ozone has been estimated as 8.4X10-16 cu cm/molecule-sec at 25 °C(SRC) that was derived using a structure estimation method(3), corresponding to an atmospheric half-life of about 1.4 days at an atmospheric concentration of 7X10+11 ozone molecules per cu cm(4).

Volatilization from Water/Soil · 1 件

The Henry's Law constant for 2,4-hexadienal is 9.78X10-6 atm-cu m/mole (1). This Henry's Law constant indicates that 2,4-hexadienal is expected to volatilize from water surfaces(2). Based on this Henry's Law constant, the volatilization half-life from a model river (1 m deep, flowing 1 m/sec, wind velocity of 3 m/sec)(2) is estimated as 3.8 days(SRC). The volatilization half-life from a model lake (1 m deep, flowing 0.05 m/sec, wind velocity of 0.5 m/sec)(2) is estimated as 30 days(SRC). 2,4-Hexadienal's Henry's Law constant indicates that volatilization from moist soil surfaces may occur(SRC). The potential for volatilization of 2,4-hexadienal from dry soil surfaces may exist(SRC) based upon an estimated vapor pressure of 4.8 mm Hg(SRC), determined from a fragment constant method(3).
