498-59-9N[C@@H](CSCSC[C@H](N)C(=O)O)C(=O)OJMQMNWIBUCGUDO-WHFBIAKZSA-NL-djenkolic acid is a dithioacetal consisting of two molecules of L-cysteine joined via their sulfanyl groups to methylene. It has a role as a toxin and a plant metabolite. It is a dithioacetal, a non-proteinogenic L-alpha-amino acid and a L-cysteine derivative.

The toxicity of djenkolic acid in humans arises from its poor solubility under acidic conditions after consumption of the jenkol bean. The amino acid precipitates into crystals which cause mechanical irritation of the renal tubules and urinary tract. (L1236)
Symptoms of djenkolic acid poisoning include abdominal discomfort, loin pains, severe colic, nausea, vomiting, dysuria, gross hematuria, and oliguria. Urolithiasis can also happen, with djenkolic acid as the nucleus. In young children it has also been reported to produce painful swelling of the genitalia. (L1236)
純化方法Crystallise djenkolic acid from a large volume of water (solubility is 0.5g%). [du Vigneaud & Patterson J Biol Chem 114 533 1936, Greenstein & Winitz The Chemistry of the Amino Acids J. Wiley, Vol 3 pp 2682, 2687 1961, Beilstein 4 III 1591.] The N,N’-dibenzoyl derivative crystallises with 1H2O from aqueous EtOH with m 87.5-89o [Beilstein 9 III 1171.]
