In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the yield of the 4-chloroacetoaceticacid ester, 4-chloroacetoaceticacid amide or 4-chloroacetoaceticacid imide is at least 90%, based on the total amount of ketene provided in step (a). More preferably, the yield is above 92% or above 95%. Preferably, the yield of 4-chloroacetoacetate chloride obtained in the first reaction step is more than 90%, preferably more than 95% or more than 98%. Preferably, the conversion of chlorine is at least 95%, more preferably at least 98% or at least 99.5%.
