Treatment · 1건

Following oral exposure to antimony, administer charcoal as a slurry (240 mL water/30 g charcoal). Following inhalation exposure, move patient to fresh air. Monitor for respiratory distress. If cough or difficulty breathing develops, evaluate for respiratory tract irritation, bronchitis, or pneumonitis. Administer oxygen and assist ventilation as required. Treat bronchospasm with inhaled beta2 agonist and oral or parenteral corticosteroids. In case of eye exposure, irrigate exposed eyes with copious amounts of room temperature water for at least 15 minutes. Following dermal exposure, remove contaminated clothing and wash exposed area thoroughly with soap and water. A physician may need to examine the area if irritation or pain persists. (T36)

InteractionsWhen thyroxin was given with antimony trioxide, marked loss in body weight gain occurred with increase in oxygen uptake; the relative distribution of antimony in the tissues was increased slightly over that of antimony alone.

Health Effects · 1건

Dermal exposure to antimony can cause antimony spots (papules and pustules around sweat and sebaceous glands). Antimony poisoning can also lead to pneumoconiosis. Alterations in pulmonary function and other effects including chronic bronchitis, chronic emphysema, inactive tuberculosis, pleural adhesions, and irritation can result from inhalation of antimony. Increased blood pressure can also result from antimony poisoning. Myocardial depression, vasodilation and fluid loss may cause shock with hypotension, electrolyte disturbances and acute renal failure. Cerebral oedema, coma, convulsions, and death are possible. Environmental Fate · 2건

TERRESTRIAL FATE: Antimony trioxide, was added to a silt-loam soil (pH 7.0, background 0.005 mmol Sb/kg) at various concentrations. The soil solution of antimony increased gradually from 2 to 35 days after addition of antimony trioxide. At the 16 mmol antimony/kg dose, more than 70% of antimony in soil solution was present as antimony(V). A half-life ranging between 50 and 250 days was calculated for antimony trioxide(1).

ATMOSPHERIC FATE: Antimony is expected to exist as the trioxide in the atmosphere, since most of the atmospheric releases of antimony substances result from high temperature industrial processes, from the combustion of petroleum, petroleum products and coal, and from the incineraton of products that contain antimony. At the high temperatures used in these processes, oxidation of the antimony substances occurs, resulting in the formation of antimony trioxide (and possibly also antimony tetraoxide and antimony pentoxide).

Biological Half-Life · 3건

...renal elimination half-life of four days following occupational inhalation of antimony trioxide and stibine in 21 employees of a starter battery manufacturing plant.

This paper describes the retention of (125)Sb oxide aerosols in human lungs based on the data obtained from a group of seven accidental inhalation exposure cases. Long-term follow-up studies for periods of time ranging from 1 to 3 d post intake to 199 to 2,422 d post intake have indicated the biological lung clearance half-time of this material ranging from about 600 to 1,100 d for non-smokers and 1,700 to 3,700 d for smokers. The retention in the lungs after 180 d in all the seven cases is found to be much more than 51% of the estimated initial alveolar deposit...There is little previously reported human data on this radionuclide compound. In these studies reliable information on actual time of intake, the likely type of material, and the amount of retained body/lung activity in initial days after the incident was also available, which adds to the importance of these data... The range of measured retained lung activities after the initial rapid clearance phase (7 d post exposure) was about 3 to 14 kBq, which was sufficient for long-term follow up studies using the whole body counters.

Airborne factory dust (with a volume median diameter of 5.0 um and a geometric standard deviation of 2.1 um) from a Swedish copper smeltery contained antimony (Sb) (1.6 weight %) and arsenic (As) (19 weight %). The dust was neutron activated and intratracheally instilled in hamsters. In vivo measurements of lung clearance were undertaken of the radionuclides (76)As, (122)Sb, and (124)Sb. Two phases were recognized in the clearance curves. The approx half-time for the initial phase was about 40 hr for antimony trioxide, and 30 hr for antimony dust. The second phase had an approx half-time of 20-40 days for antimony trioxide and antimony dust. The low solubility of antimony in factory dust combined with a long biological half-time may be of importance in explaining the observed lung accumulation of antimony in exposed workers...

Metabolism/Metabolites · 2건

Recently, tellurium (Te), antimony (Sb) and germanium (Ge) have been used as an alloy in phase-change optical magnetic disks, such as digital versatile disk-random access memory (DVD-RAM) and DVD-recordable disk (DVD-RW). Although these metalloids, the so-called "exotic" elements, are known to be non-essential and harmful, little is known about their toxic effects and metabolism. Metalloid compounds, tellurite, antimonite and germanium dioxide, were simultaneously administered to rats. Their distributions metabolites were determined and identified by speciation. Te and Sb accumulated in red blood cells (RBCs): Te accumulated in RBCs in the dimethylated form, while Sb accumulated in the inorganic/non-methylated form. In addition, trimethyltelluronium (TMTe) was the urinary metabolite of Te, whereas Sb in urine was not methylated but oxidized. Ge was also not methylated in rats. These results suggest that each metalloid is metabolized via a unique pathway. /Antimony metabolites/

Antimony is widely distributed throughout the body. The hair and skin contain the highest levels of antimony. The adrenal glands, lung, large intestine, trachea, cerebellum, and kidneys also contain relatively high levels of antimony. Blood is the main vehicle for the transport of absorbed antimony to various tissue compartments of the body. Antimony is a metal and, therefore, does not undergo catabolism. Antimony can covalently interact with sulfhydryl groups and phosphate, as well as numerous reversible binding interactions with endogenous ligands (e.g., proteins). It is not known if these interactions are toxicologically significant. Antimony is excreted via the urine and feces. Some of the fecal antimony may represent unabsorbed antimony that is cleared from the lung via mucociliary action into the esophagus to the gastrointestinal tract. (L741)

No particular difference in tissue distribution between rabbit and rat was noted when the animals were fed 2 percent Sb2O3 in a casein diet. Mean amounts of the antimony ranged from 6.7 to 88 ug/g of tissue in seven samples analyzed. The largest amounts were in the thyroid and adrenal glands, spleen, liver, lung, heart, and kidney, in that order.

Women working in an antimony metallurgical plant were compared with a similar group of women not exposed to antimony. ... Antimony concentrations in the blood of exposed workers were 10 times greater than controls. Urine levels of antimony ranged from 2.1-2.9 mg/100 mL. Analysis of biologic fluids detected antimony breast milk concentrations of 3.3 +/ - 2 mg/L; placental tissue, 3.2-12.6 mg/100 mL; amniotic fluid, 6.2 +/- 2.8 mg/100 mL; and umbilical cord blood, 6.3 +/- 3 mg/100 mL. These women were exposed to unspecified amounts of antimony trioxide, metallic antimony, and antimony pentasulfides.

Rats were administered antimony trioxide. After single oral doses of 200 mg antimony trioxide in 5 mL of water, only 3.24% of the dose was eliminated in the urine. Levels in the feces were not measured. After administration of antimony trioxide in the diet at a concn of 2% for 8 months, antimony excretion in the feces was much greater than in the urine.

제조 방법 · 1건

Antimony trioxide is obtained by roasting stibnite:2 Sb2S3 + 9 O2 → 2Sb2O3 + 6SO2Temperature and air feed is carefully controlled in the process to suppress any formation of antimony tetroxide (Sb2O4). Antimony trioxide is separated from any arsenic trioxide (As2O3) that may be present as an impurity by volatilization, as the latter is much more volatile than the former. It may be also prepared by alkaline hydrolysis of antimony trichloride and subsequent dehydration of hydrous oxide under controlled heating (rapid or vigorous heating may partially oxidize Sb(III) to Sb(V).Antimony trioxide also may be made by heating the metallic element with oxygen or air. The volatilizing trioxide is condensed and collected.
