화학적 성질
Molybdenum trioxide is an odorless, white crystalline powder that turns yellow when heated. Molybdenum trioxide is perhaps the most important compound of molybdenum. Pure molybdenum trioxide is used in chemical and catalyst manufacture. The technical product is added to steel as an alloying agent. Molybdenum trioxide also serves as a catalyst in the petroleum industry and as a component of ceramics, enamels and pigments.

First Aid
EYES: First check the victim for contact lenses and remove if present. Flush victim's eyes with water or normal saline solution for 20 to 30 minutes while simultaneously calling a hospital or poison control center. Do not put any ointments, oils, or medication in the victim's eyes without specific instructions from a physician. IMMEDIATELY transport the victim after flushing eyes to a hospital even if no symptoms (such as redness or irritation) develop.
Nonfire Spill Response
SMALL SPILLS AND LEAKAGE: If you spill this chemical, dampen the solid spill material with 5% ammonium hydroxide, then transfer the dampened material to a suitable container. Use absorbent paper dampened with 5% ammonium hydroxide to pick up any remaining material. Your contaminated clothing and the absorbent paper should be sealed in a vapor-tight plastic bag for eventual disposal. Wash all contaminated surfaces with 5% ammonium hydroxide followed by washing with a soap and water solution. Do not reenter the contaminated area until the Safety Officer (or other responsible person) has verified that the area has been properly cleaned.
Disposal Methods
SRP: At the time of review, criteria for land treatment or burial (sanitary landfill) disposal practices are subject to significant revision. Prior to implementing land disposal of waste residue (including waste sludge), consult with environmental regulatory agencies for guidance on acceptable disposal practices.
Preventive Measures
SRP: The scientific literature for the use of contact lenses in industry is conflicting. The benefit or detrimental effects of wearing contact lenses depend not only upon the substance, but also on factors including the form of the substance, characteristics and duration of the exposure, the uses of other eye protection equipment, and the hygiene of the lenses. However, there may be individual substances whose irritating or corrosive properties are such that the wearing of contact lenses would be harmful to the eye. In those specific cases, contact lenses should not be worn. In any event, the usual eye protection equipment should be worn even when contact lenses are in place.
Employees should wash promptly when skin becomes contaminated. Promptly remove nonimpervious clothing that becomes contaminated. /Molybdenum, soluble compounds (as Mo)/

Mechanism of Action
The mechanism of molybdenum toxicity is not yet quite understood. It is assumed that the primary factor is the formation of a copper-tetrathiomolybdate complex in the reduction medium of the gastrointestinal tract which reduces the biological utility of copper. /Molybdenum/
Molybdenum is an essential metal as a cofactor for the enzymes xanthine oxidase and aldehyde oxidase. /Molybdenum/
Biological Half-Life
Data ... concerning excretion and the rapid clearance from the liver, kidney, spleen, testis, and hard tissues in animal studies show that the biological half time, at least for the most part of the absorbed molybdenum, must be in the order of hours and extending to a max of about one day in lab animals and cows. ... After a single subcutaneous injection in rats, the concentration of molybdenum in blood decr rapidly. After 24 hr, only about 1% of the max concn remained. During the next 10 days, concn in blood diminished with a half time of about 7 days. After application of doses up to 3 ug/kg to rats the biological half time was 3 hr for subcutaneous, and 6 hr for intragastric application. After single subcutaneous application of 0.02 to 1 ug molybdenum/kg to rats the biological half time in the kidneys, liver, spleen, jejunoileum, and skin varied between 2.5 and 4.7 days. /Molybdenum/
Absorption, Distribution and Excretion
Following rapid absorption from the gastrointestinal tract /of/ guinea pigs, molybdenum trioxide was found to be deposited rather uniformly in the critical organs within 4 hr ... .
Rats stored relatively more molybdenum from ingested molybdenum trioxide than from Powellite (CaMoO4). ... Significant storage above normal of molybdenum in bone was noted in all cases.
RABBITS SHOWED ... RAPID ABSORPTION OF MOLYBDENUM /AS MOLYBDENUM TRIOXIDE/ FOLLOWING INGESTION, WITH RAPIDLY RISING BLOOD LEVELS. MOLYBDENUM IS RAPIDLY ELIMINATED BY KIDNEYS, RETURNING ... TO NORMAL VALUES IN 72 HR ... FECAL ELIMINATION, WHICH IS ABOUT 1/2 THAT OF URINARY, RETURNED TO NORMAL ... IN 72 HR.
IN BLOOD, LEVEL DEPENDS LARGELY ON CONTENT OF MOLYBDENUM AND INORGANIC SULFATE IN DIET. ... RABBITS GIVEN SINGLE DOSE OF TRIOXIDE HAVE SHOWN A RISE FROM 130 TO 200 UG PER 100 ML, EVEN AS HIGH AS 1,850-1,970 UG ... .

응용 분야
용도Molybdenum trioxide (MnO3) is a compound used to make enamels adhere to metals.
일반 설명Colorless to white or yellow odorless solid. Sinks in water.
제조 방법
Molybdenum(VI) oxide is obtained by igniting molybdenum or its compounds in air: 2Mo + 3O2 → 2MoO3 2MoS2 + 7O2 → 2MoO3 + 4SO2 MoS2 + 4O2 → MoO3 + SO2 + SO3 Roasting the sulfide is carried out in a multiple-hearth roaster under controlled temperature and airflow. The product mixture is sublimed to obtain high purity oxide. Purified molybdenum(VI) oxide also is made by prolonged heating of ammonium molybdate in air: (NH4)2Mo2O7 → 2MoO3 + 2NH3 + H2O An alternative method involves repeatedly evaporating a mixture of ammonium molybdate and nitric acid. Ammonium nitrate so formed is separated from the product molybdenum(VI) oxide by extraction with water: (NH4)2Mo2O7 + 2HNO3 → 2MoO3 + 2NH4NO3 + H2O
