화학적 성질

Smithsonite is zinc carbonate, ZnCO3, a hexagonal mineral with a rhombohedral cleavage. It is a brittle mineral; hardness, 4–4.5; specific gravity, 4.3–4.5; luster, vitreous to dull; color, usually white, but may be colored yellowish or brownish or perhaps blue or green due to impurities. It is translucent to opaque.

Prior to implementing land disposal of waste residue (including waste sludge), consult with environmental regulatory agencies for guidance on acceptable disposal practices.

TreatmentZinc poisoning is treated symptomatically, often by administering fluids such as water or milk, or with gastric lavage. (L49)
상호 작용The effects of Eimeria acervulina infection (duodenal coccidiosis) on cadmium toxicity and zinc status in the young chick /were evaluated/. Additions of cadmium (45 mg/kg) were made to diets that contained either 0 or 52 mg/kg supplemental zinc (from zinc carbonate). Growth and efficiency of feed utilization were reduced by dietary cadmium addition while concurrent coccidial infection reduced these parameters further. Addition of cadmium also increased cadmium content of liver and kidney and depressed hemoglobin, hematocrit, and plasma zinc content. Coccidial infection exacerbated tissue cadmium deposition and depressed hematological parameters further. Although dietary zinc addition ameliorated some of the adverse effects of cadmium toxicity, cadium administration tended to enhance tissue zinc deposition.
건강 영향Chronic exposure to zinc causes anemia, atazia, lethargy, and decreases the level of good cholesterol in the body. It is also believed to cause pancreatic and reproductive damage. (L49)

독성 요약The CIR Expert Panel concluded that the following 27 zinc salts are safe in cosmetics in the present practices of use and concentration described in this safety assessment when formulated to be non-irritating...Zinc Carbonate...Safe for use in cosmetics, with qualificationsAnaemia results from the excessive absorption of zinc suppressing copper and iron absorption, most likely through competitive binding of intestinal mucosal cells. Unbalanced levels of copper and zinc binding to Cu,Zn-superoxide dismutase has been linked to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Stomach acid dissolves metallic zinc to give corrosive zinc chloride, which can cause damage to the stomach lining. Metal fume fever is thought to be an immune response to inhaled zinc. (L48, L49, A49)
Signs and SymptomsIngestion of large doses of zinc causes stomach cramps, nausea, and vomiting. Acute inhalation of large amounts of zinc causes metal fume fever, which is characterized by chills, fever, headache, weakness, dryness of the nose and throat, chest pain, and coughing. Dermal contact with zinc results in skin irritation. (L49)

Carcinogen ClassificationNo indication of carcinogenicity to humans (not listed by IARC).
Non-Human Toxicity ExcerptsINTAKES OF ZINC IN FORM OF ... CARBONATE, EQUAL TO 2500 PPM OF THE DIET, ARE COMPLETELY WITHOUT EFFECT ON RATS ... .Female weanling C57BL/6J mice of 21 days of age were fed a diet containing normal (50 ppm) or excess (2000 ppm) levels of zinc administered as zinc carbonate. At about 6 weeks of age, treated females were bred with C57BL/6J males. Offspring were weaned and fed their mothers' diet until sacrifice at 8 weeks of age. Mice exposed to excess zinc during gestation/lactation/postweaning development had reduced plasma copper levels, lower hematocrit values, and reduced body weights, compared to controls. Mice exposed to excess dietary zinc began to lose hair at about 2-4 weeks of age, and at 5 weeks of age, the alopecia was most severe. The skin of treated mice at 5 weeks of age was thinner than that of controls. Hair regrowth began at about 6 weeks of age and the coat of hair had regrown by 8 weeks of age, but was lighter in color than that of control mice.EXCESS ZINC CARBONATE RETARDS GROWTH IN WEANLING RATS, WHICH PRODUCE STILLBORN PUPS WHEN THEY MATURE. ... DIETARY ZINC CARBONATE REDUCED LIVER CYTOCHROME OXIDASE & CATALASE ACTIVITIES WHEN ZINC CONTENT WAS 0.4%.The water insoluble salt, zinc carbonate, was not toxic to fish. Apparently, zinc toxicity to fish is influenced by temperature, pH, and salt solubility.Even when they were fed zinc carbonate at a dietary level of 7000 ppm of zinc (350 mg/kg/day), young rats survived, although they developed marked anemia in 4 weeks and grew poorly. A dietary level of 10,000 ppm killed up to 75% of rats in 3-5 weeks.
