Sulfotep: Does not have an individual approval but may be used as a component in a product covered by a group standard. It is not approved for use as a chemical in its own right.
The New Jersey Worker and Community Right to Know Act requires public and private employers to provide information about hazardous substances at their workplaces. (N.J.S.A. 34:5A-1 et. seq.)
Fire Hazards
When heated to decomposition, emits highly toxic fumes of phosphorus oxides and sulfur oxides. Avoid strong oxidizers. Technical products corrosive to iron. (EPA, 1998)
· Combustible material: may burn but does not ignite readily.;· When heated, vapors may form explosive mixtures with air: indoors, outdoors and sewers explosion hazards.;· Those substances designated with a (P) may polymerize explosively when heated or involved in a fire.;· Corrosives in contact with metals may evolve flammable hydrogen gas.;· Containers may explode when heated.;· Runoff may pollute waterways.;· Substance may be transported in a molten form.
Combustible. Gives off irritating or toxic fumes (or gases) in a fire. Risk of fire and explosion as a result of decomposition when heated.
Health Hazards
Super toxic; probable oral lethal dose in humans is less than 5 mg/kg, or a taste (less than 7 drops) for a 70 kg (150 lb.) person. It is a cholinesterase inhibitor. (EPA, 1998)
· TOXIC and/or CORROSIVE; inhalation, ingestion or skin contact with material may cause severe injury or death.;· Methyl bromoacetate (UN2643) is an eye irritant/lachrymator (causes flow of tears).;· Contact with molten substance may cause severe burns to skin and eyes.;· Avoid any skin contact.;· Fire may produce irritating, corrosive and/or toxic gases.;· Runoff from fire control or dilution water may be corrosive and/or toxic and cause environmental contamination.
Hazards Summary
Its toxicity is similar to that of parathion. [ACGIH] The average of two baseline respective cholinesterase activity determinations three days apart, with no exposures to enzyme inhibiting pesticides for at least 30 days, is recommended for each worker prior to exposure to cholinesterase inhibitors because of large inter-individual differences in published baseline values. To be established at least once a year. Removal from workplace exposures is recommended until the cholinesterase activity returns to within 20% of baseline. [TLVs and BEIs]
The major hazards encountered in the use and handling of dithion stem from its toxicologic properties as an organophosphate pesticide. Surface contact may cause burns to the skin and eyes. Systemic effects from skin absorption, ingestion, or inhalation of dithion range from headache, weakness, and disorientation, to convulsions, coma, and death from respiratory arrest. To preclude these effects, the OSHA PEL for dithion has been set at 200 mg/cu m, with an indication that skin contact is to be avoided. Nevertheless, those involved in the handling and use of this pale, oily insecticide should assure protection by wearing gloves, rubber boots, eye protection, overalls made of tight fabric or polyvinyl chloride, and a respirator with an activated-carbon gas filter cartridge, or a self-contained breathing apparatus. Strict personal hygiene is equally important. Non-impervious clothing should be removed immediately if contaminated with dithion, and exposed skin washed with soap and water. Smoking and eating in dithion work areas should be prohibited and protective clothing should be removed before going home. Use or handling of dithion should not be conducted by persons with diseases of the respiratory system, CNS, liver, kidney, or eyes. Protect from exposure those under 18 yr of age, expectant or nursing mothers, and alcoholics. Dithion will not ignite easily, but it may burn and containers may explode in the heat of a fire. For small fires involving dithion, extinguish with dry chemical or CO2, and for large fires, use water spray (a solid stream may be ineffective), fog or foam. Also, use water spray to knock down vapor and cool containers. Those involved in fire-fighting should wear a positive-pressure breathing apparatus and full protective clothing. Dithion should be stored away from strong oxidizers, sparks, flames or other sources of ignition. The fact that dithion is corrosive to iron should be considered in choosing appropriate storage containers. Containers o

Environmental Fate
TERRESTRIAL FATE: Based on a classification scheme(1), an estimated Koc value of 3,500(SRC), determined from a log Kow of 3.99(2) and a regression-derived equation(4), indicates that sulfotep is expected to have slight mobility in soil(SRC). Volatilization of sulfotep from moist soil surfaces is expected to be an important fate process(SRC) given an estimated Henry's Law constant of 4.4X10-6 atm-cu m/mole(SRC) derived from its vapor pressure, 1.05X10-4 mm Hg(2), and water solubility, 30 mg/l(3). However, adsorption to soil is expected to attenuate volatilization(SRC). Sulfotep is not expected to volatilize from dry soil surfaces(SRC) based upon its vapor pressure(2). No soil biodegradation data were located(SRC).
AQUATIC FATE: Based on a classification scheme(1), an estimated Koc value of 3,500(SRC), determined from a log Kow of 3.99(2) and a regression-derived equation(4), indicates that sulfotep is expected to adsorb to suspended solids and sediment(SRC). Volatilization from water surfaces is expected(4) based upon an estimated Henry's Law constant of 4.4X10-6 atm-cu m/mole(SRC), derived from its vapor pressure, 1.05X10-4 mm Hg(2), and water solubility, 30 mg/l(3). Using this Henry's Law constant and an estimation method(4), volatilization half-lives for a model river and model lake are 28 and 206 days, respectively(SRC). However, volatilization from water surfaces is expected to be attenuated by adsorption to suspended solids and sediment in the water column. The estimated volatilization half-life from a model pond is 68 months if adsorption is considered(5). Sulfotep underwent no observable photolysis upon laboratory irradiation in pure water(6). According to a classification scheme(7), an estimated BCF of 240(SRC), from its log Kow(2) and a regression-derived equation(8), suggests the potential for bioconcentration in aquatic organisms high(SRC). No aquatic biodegradation data were located(SRC).
ATMOSPHERIC FATE: According to a model of gas/particle partitioning of semivolatile organic compounds in the atmosphere(1), sulfotep, which has a vapor pressure of 1.05X10-4 mm Hg at 20 °C(2), is expected to exist solely as a vapor in the ambient atmosphere. Vapor-phase sulfotep is degraded in the atmosphere by reaction with photochemically-produced hydroxyl radicals(SRC); the half-life for this reaction in air is estimated to be 2 hrs(SRC), calculated from its rate constant of 1.8X10-10 cu cm/molecule-sec at 25 °C(SRC) that was derived using a structure estimation method(3). Sulfotep underwent no observable photolysis upon laboratory irradiation in pure water(4).
Food Survey Values
Sulfotep was listed as a pesticide found infrequently in leaf and stem vegetables, 1970-1976(1). The compound was not detected during 1994 regulatory monitoring of 329 pesticides conducted in the US(2). Sulfotep was detected in 1 of 31 Danish pepper samples collected in 1996 for the Danish National Pesticide Monitoring Program(3).

Mechanism of Action
/DITHIONE/ ... IS ABOUT HALF AS TOXIC AS PARATHION ACUTELY ... ITS PRINCIPAL TOXIC EFFECT IS CHOLINESTERASE INHIBITION.
Cholinesterase inhibitor
Absorption, Distribution and Excretion
Orally admin sulfotep was absorbed relatively quickly by rats. Elimination took place quickly via the kidney. The main elimination product is the diethylthiophosphate.
... Based on what is known about other organophosphates, it is likely to be well absorbed via all routes of exposures, rapidly oxidatively desulfurated to oxon derivatives, and/or hydrolyzed to dimethyl thiophosphoric acid or diethyl phosphoric acids.

Insecticide; acaricide
Greenhouse fumigant to control aphids, spider mites, thrips, and whiteflies.
Used in aerosols for greenhouse pest control
Impurities
The analysis of technical organophosphorus insecticides by (31)P nuclear magnetic resonance showed the major known toxic contaminants to be simple trialkyl phosphorothio- and -dithioic acid esters and the S-alkyl insecticide isomers. Small amt of the bis derivatives & the dithiopyrophosphate were also detected. These contaminants included both byproducts from the synthesis as well as degradation products. This procedure was used to analyze the following technical grade products: ronnel, sulfotepp, methyl parathion, dimethoate, malathion, methidathion, ethion, phosalone, & fenitrothion.
