개요

Chlorine trifluoride appears as a colorless gas or green liquid with a pungent odor. Boils at 53 °F. It reacts with water to form chlorine and hydrofluoric acid with release of heat. Contact with organic materials may result in spontaneous ignition. It is corrosive to metals and tissue. Prolonged exposure to low concentrations or short term exposure to high concentrations may result in adverse health effects. Under prolonged exposure to fire or intense heat the container may violently rupture and rocket.

TIH (Toxic Inhalation Hazard) - Term used to describe gases and volatile liquids that are toxic when inhaled. Some are TIH materials themselves, e.g., chlorine, and some release TIH gases when spilled in water, e.g., chlorosilanes. [ERG 2016].

Fire Fighting Procedures · 3건

Do not use water water. Violent reaction may result. Use appropriate extinguishing agents on nearby combustible fires. Use of dry chemical or carbon dioxide preferred.

If material involved in fire: Do not use water on material itself. Use dry chemical or carbon dioxide. Cool all affected containers with flooding quantities of water. If large quantities of combustibles are involved, use water in flooding quantities as spray and fog. Use water spray to knock-down vapors.

Wear chemical protective suit with self-contained breathing apparatus. Combat fires from safe distance or protected location. Extinguish with dry chemicals or carbon dioxide. DO NOT USE WATER OR FOAM ON ADJACENT FIRES.

Storage Conditions · 1건

Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated location. Keep cylinders restrained. Separate from water, organic matter, glass, asbestos, sand, chlorofluorocarbons, acids, alkalies, halogens, slats, metal oxides. Outside or detached storage is preferred.

Cleanup Methods · 1건

1) Ventilate area of spill or leak. 2) If in gaseous form, stop flow of gas. If source of leak is cylinder & leak cannot be stopped in place, remove...to safe place in open air, & repair leak or allow cylinder to empty. 3) If in liquid form, evacuate persons not wearing protective equipment from spill area. Allow chlorine trifluoride to evaporate while providing all available ventilation.

INHALATION EXPOSURE OF RATS AT 800 PPM ... FOR 15 MIN WAS UNIFORMLY LETHAL; HOWEVER, REDUCING EXPOSURE TIME TO 13 MIN PERMITTED SURVIVAL IN MOST TESTS. EXPOSURE AT 400 PPM FOR 35 MIN WAS ALSO UNIFORMLY LETHAL. CHLORINE TRIFLUORIDE EXPOSURES RESULTED IN INFLAMMATION OF MUCOSAL SURFACES, BURNING OF THE SKIN, AND CORNEAL ULCERATION. LUNG DAMAGE WAS ESTABLISHED FROM A DECREASED RELEASE OF CARBON DIOXIDE FROM THE LUNG FOLLOWING ADMIN OF BICARBONATE & FROM LOWERED BLOOD PH. THE ACUTE TOXICITY OF CHLORINE TRIFLUORIDE WAS CONSIDERED TO BE COMPARABLE TO THAT OF HYDROGEN FLUORIDE ON A FLUORINE-EQUIVALENT BASIS. OF THE MAJOR DECOMPOSITION PRODUCTS OF TOXICOLOGIC INTEREST, CHLORINE DIOXIDE HAD BEEN FOUND PREVIOUSLY TO BE THE MOST TOXIC; ITS ACUTE TOXICITY WAS CONSIDERED TO BE COMPARABLE TO THAT OF CHLORINE TRIFLUORIDE ON A CHLORINE EQUIVALENT BASIS.

... TWO DOGS & 20 RATS /WERE EXPOSED/ AT AN AVG CONCN OF 1.17 PPM ... FOR ... 6 MO ON A 6 HR/DAY, 5 DAY/WK BASIS. AN ADDNL 2 DOGS & 20 RATS SERVED AS CONTROLS. EARLY SIGNS OF TOXICITY IN THE DOGS WERE COUGHING, SNEEZING, RHINORRHEA, SALIVATION, PANTING RESPIRATION, AND OCCASIONAL EXPULSION OF FROTHY FLUID FROM THE MOUTH & NOSE. AFTER ABOUT 2 MO, BOTH DOGS HAD RECURRENT BOUTS OF PNEUMONIA. ONE DOG DIED ON THE 115TH DAY. SIGNS WERE NOT AS PRONOUNCED IN THE RATS; HOWEVER, AFTER SEVERAL WK, A BLOOD-TINGED DISCHARGE APPEARED ABOUT THE NARES AND EYES. SIX RATS DIED DURING THE COURSE OF THE EXPT. PATHOLOGIC FINDINGS WERE SEVERE PULMONARY IRRITATION IN BOTH SPECIES AMONG THE SURVIVORS AS WELL AS AMONG THE ANIMALS THAT DIED COMPARED WITH UNREMARKABLE PATHOLOGY IN THE CONTROLS.

Chlorine trifluoride is an extremely reactive, corrosive and irritating gas which experimentally has been observed to cause a severe reaction in the lungs and in all exposed mucous membranes. It it highly irritating to the skin and eyes, and has caused severe corneal ulcers in dogs.

Populations at Special RiskPersons with impaired pulmonary function may be at increased risk from exposure.
Probable Routes of Human ExposureThe hazard of exposure to chlorine trifluoride in atmosphere is at least as great as that of chlorine.

Fluoride is protoplasmic poison that binds with calcium, inhibits enzyme systems, and activates glycolic and proteolytic mechanisms. Management consists of symptomatic and supportive care, plus the administration of calcium and the treatment of hyperkalemia. Hemodialysis may be useful in severe cases. Prognosis is largely dictated by the clinical course over the first several hours. Survival beyond 4 hours is generally associated with a favorable outcome. /Fluoride/
