AN ATTEMPT WAS MADE TO DETERMINE THE ADSORPTION ABILITY OF SURFACTANTS (EG, SODIUM DODECYL SULFATE) BY THE HUMAN HORNY LAYERS IN VIVO, BY UTILIZING ACIDIC DYE. ADSORBING RESIDUAL AMT OF SURFACTANTS REVEALED THAT THERE WAS A POSITIVE CORRELATION BETWEEN ADSORBING & ROUGHENING EFFECTS.
SODIUM POLYOXYETHYLENE ALKYLSULFATE WAS READILY ABSORBED BY CARP AS DETERMINED BY AUTORADIOGRAPHY.
CIR ingredient: Sodium Laureth Sulfate
Used as surfactant for household detergents, shampoos, and bubble baths; [HSDB]
COMPONENT OF SURFACTANT FOR HOUSEHOLD DETERGENTS; SURFACTANT FOR SHAMPOOS & BUBBLE BATHS

/SODIUM LAURYL SULFATE/...MAY PRODUCE DRYING EFFECT ON SKIN. /SODIUM LAURYL SULFATE/
SODIUM LAURYL SULFATE IS SAID TO HAVE BEEN COMMONEST CAUSE OF EYE IRRITATION BY COMMERCIAL SHAMPOOS. /SODIUM LAURYL SULFATE/
TAKEN BY MOUTH, SODIUM LAURYL SULFATE STIMULATES GASTRIC MUCOUS PRODUCTION & SOMETIMES INACTIVATES PEPSIN IN TEST ANIMALS. /SODIUM LAURYL SULFATE/
SODIUM POLYOXYETHYLENE LAURYL SULFATES THAT POSSESS SHORTER CHAINS OF HYDROPHILIC GROUP PRODUCED MORE IRRITATING ACTIONS ON SKIN OF GUINEA PIGS & RABBITS THAN THOSE WITH LONGER CHAINS.
EFFECTS UPON STRATUM CORNEUM WERE STUDIED BY MEANS OF KERATIN DENATURATION & EXTRACTION OF PROTEINS & AMINO ACIDS. PERCUTANEOUS ABSORPTION OF LABELED SURFACTANTS BY GUINEA PIGS IN VIVO WAS STUDIED. SODIUM LAURYL ETHER SULFATE HAD LOWER PENETRABILITIES.
ANIONIC & AMPHOLYTIC SURFACTANTS USED IN SHAMPOO FORMULATIONS WERE EXAMINED FOR EYE IRRITATING ACTIVITY IN RABBITS. AMPHOLYTIC SURFACTANTS PRODUCED SEVERE EYE IRRITATION, @ 2.5 & 5.0%. EYE IRRITATION WAS OBSERVED WITH LAURYL ETHER SULFATES ONLY @ 20% CONCN.
EFFECTS OF DETERGENTS WERE MEASURED IN LAB BY CULTURING YOUNG STAGES & MEASURING RESPIRATION RATES OF DISCS OF MATURE FROND TISSUE OF LAMINARIA HYPERBOREA. IN CULTURE, SURVIVAL OF GERMINATING GAMETOPHYTES WAS REDUCED WITH TOXIC CONCN OF 10 MG/CU OF SODIUM LAURYL ETHER SULFATE.
