TERRESTRIAL FATE: Based on a recommended classification scheme(1), an estimated Koc value of 24,000(SRC), determined from a measured log Kow(2) and a recommended regression-derived equation(3), suggests that iodofenphos will be immobile in soil(SRC). Iodofenphos had measured half-lives of 70.5 and 85.1 days in illuminated and non-illuminated soil, respectively(4). The main degradation product was 2,5-dichloro-4-iodophenol indicating that the main decomposition reaction was the cleavage of the aryl ester bond(4). Degradation was due to both abiotic and biotic reactions. Volatilization of iodofenphos is not expected to be important from moist soil surfaces(SRC) given an estimated Henry's Law constant of 4.5X10-6 atm-cu m/mole(SRC), determined from experimental values for vapor pressure(5) and water solubility(6). Volatilization from dry soil surfaces(SRC) is not expected based on a measured vapor pressure of 8.25X10-7 mm Hg(5).
AQUATIC FATE: Based on a recommended classification scheme(1), an estimated Koc value of 24,000(SRC), determined from a measured log Kow(2) and a recommended regression-derived equation(1), suggests that iodofenphos will adsorb to suspended solids and sediment in water(SRC). Half-lives of 0.4 and 1.9 days were measured for iodofenphos in illuminated and non-illuminated rainwater, respectively(3). The main degradation product was 2,5-dichloro-4-iodophenol indicating that the main decomposition reaction was the cleavage of the aryl ester bond(3). Degradation was due to both abiotic and biotic reactions. Iodofenphos is not expected to volatilize from water surfaces based on an estimated Henry's Law constant of 4.5X10-6 atm-cu m/mole(SRC), calculated from experimental values for vapor pressure(4) and water solubility(5). Estimated half-lives for a model river and model lake are 17 and 130, respectively(1,SRC), although adsorption to particulate matter may attenuate the volatilization of this compound from water surfaces(SRC). An estimated BCF value of 9000(1,SRC), from an estimated log Kow(2,SRC), and a BCF of 48,000, measured in guppies(6), indicate that iodofenphos will bioconcentrate in aquatic organisms(SRC), according to a recommended classification scheme(7).
ATMOSPHERIC FATE: According to a model of gas/particle partitioning of semivolatile organic compounds in the atmosphere(1), iodofenphos, which has a measured vapor pressure of 8.25X10-7 mm Hg at 25 °C(2), will exist in both the vapor and particulate phases in the ambient atmosphere. Vapor-phase iodofenphos is degraded in the atmosphere by reaction with photochemically produced hydroxyl radicals(SRC); the half-life for this reaction in air is estimated to be about 7 hours(3,SRC). Particulate-phase iodofenphos may be physically removed from the air by dry deposition(SRC).
Iodofenphos applied at 0.3 mg/kg soil slightly stimulated the soil nitrifying activity while a 10 fold increase in the insecticide rate caused an inhibition of nitrification. The nitrification inhibition increased with further increase in iodofenphos rate to 6-7.5 mg/kg soil. The inhibition increased during the 1st 10 days of the insecticide application and then decreased but was still observed 30 days after iodofenphos treatment of the soil.
Photolysis of ... iodofenphos ... was studied in the dark and under artificial sunlight conditions in rain water and on standard soil surface. Iodofenphos was readily degraded under the conditions used. ... The major degrdn product identified from iodofenphos was 2,5-dichloro-4-iodophenol. ... Metabolites were found in both media in the dark and under artificial sun light.
Workers handling & applying pesticides must undergo an annual medical examination at the beginning of each agricultural season. Contraindications for work with /organophosphorus pesticides/ are organic diseases of the central nervous system, mental disorders & epilepsy, pronounced endocrine & vegetative disorders, pulmonary tuberculosis, bronchial asthma, chronic respiratory diseases, cardiovascular diseases & circulatory disorders, gastrointestinal diseases (peptic ulcer), gastroenterocolitis, diseases of liver & kidneys, eye diseases (chronic conjunctivitis & keratitis). The blood cholinesterase activity must be determined before work starts. In the event of prolonged work periods, this activity should be determined at intervals of 3-4 days. Persons exhibiting a fall in cholinesterase activity of 25% or more must be transferred to other work where they are not exposed to organophosphorus pesticides until this activity is completely restored. Persons with initial signs of indisposition should cease work with pesticides. /Organophosphorus pesticides/
A final diagnosis of mild to moderate acute organophosphate pesticide poisoning is rarely justified unless all of the following five conditions are present: 1. A definite history of exposure to an organophosphate pesticide. 2. A latent interval of not more than a few hours between that last exposure and the onset of illness. 3. A clinical picture in which most or all of the following signs or symptoms are present: headache, blurred vision, weakness, tightness in chest, and constricted pupils. 4. Reduction of plasma and RBC cholinesterase activity to a level substantially below 50% of baseline values. Because of the wide normal range of RBC cholinesterase in the population, symptoms may be present with reported "normal" levels. 5. An acute illness that is not substantially longer than 48 hours. The classic presentation for acute organophosphate toxicity includes history, evidence of exposure to organophosphate (garlic odor), signs/symptoms of cholinergic excess, improvement with atropine or pralidoxime, and inhibition of cholinesterase in blood. /Organophosphate pesticide poisoning/
... Surveillance of workers could be carried out through measurement of blood or urinary levels of the cmpd to which they are exposed, or through measurement of a metabolite. /Organic phosphorus pesticides/
The Koc of iodofenphos is estimated as approximately 24,000(SRC), using a measured log Kow of 5.51(1) and a regression-derived equation(2,SRC). According to a recommended classification scheme(3), this estimated Koc value suggests that iodofenphos will be immobile in soil(SRC).
Five sprayers and one mixer applied 50% water-wettable iodofenfos powder as a 5% suspension of active ingredient at an intended rate of 2 gm/sq m. They treated a village of 874 homes and 412 other structures. Most of the walls were of mud and the roofs of thatch. The work required 5 to 6 hr/day for 8 days. No complaints attributed to the insecticide were elicited from the 6 workers or the 1819 inhabitants of the village. There was no significant depression of whole-blood cholinesterase among the workers or among over 30 inhabitants who were tested 1 and 10 days after spraying.

Iodofenphos's former use(1) as a contact and stomach insecticide and acaricide for control of flies and mosquitoes in public hygiene, indoor pests such as ants, bedbugs, cockroaches, fleas and warehouse pests(2) has resulted in its direct release to the environment(SRC).
Iodofenphos had measured half-lives of 70.5 and 85.1 days in illuminated and non-illuminated soil, respectively(1). The main degradation product was 2,5-dichloro-4-iodophenol indicating that the main decomposition reaction was the cleavage of the aryl ester bond(1). Degradation was due to both abiotic and biotic reactions.
An estimated BCF value of 9000 was calculated for iodofenphos(SRC), using a measured log Kow of 5.51(1) and a recommended regression-derived equation(2). Guppies, Poecilia reticulata, exposed to a mixture of cyanophos, methylparathion, ronnel, fenitrothion, dicapthon, and iodofenphos had a bioconcentration factor of 48,000 for iodofenphos; an elimination rate constant of 0.36/day was observed for the same compound(3). According to a recommended classification scheme(4), these values indicate a very high BCF, and that short-term bioaccumulation will occur(SRC) based on a measured elimination rate in aquatic organisms(3).
Biotransformation of a series of organophosphorus compounds by the 9,000 g supernatant of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) liver was tested in an in vitro system fortified either with NADPH-generating cofactors or with reduced glutathione. Elimination rate constants for both systems were calculated from linear decay curves when substrate concentrations were used that were considerably lower than the Km values of the concerned enzymatic reactions. The results reveal a large variation in both the oxidative and the glutathione-mediated biotransformation rate of the organophosphorus compounds. Half-lives ranged from 25 to 1,216 min in the NADPH system and from 18 to 381 min in the glutathione system. Elimination rate constants in the glutathione system were related to Hammett sigma constants or reactivity toward 4-nitrobenzylpyridine, which substantiates the assumption that electrophilicity is the controlling variable for the reaction with glutathione within this particular class of compounds. A remarkable analogy was observed between compounds that were metabolized relatively quickly by glutathione S-transferases and compounds that showed a reduced bioconcentration factor in guppies. A significant improvement of the relationship between the bioconcentration factor in guppies and the octanol/water partition coefficient was obtained when the rate constant with glutathione was introduced in this relationship. Such an improvement was not obtained with the rate constants from the oxidative system. These observations are discussed in view of the differences in the activities of the involved enzyme systems in the test species and in view of the possible relevance of the different biotransformation pathways for the in vivo situation.
Cholinesterase inhibitor.
The cardiovascular actions of anticholinesterase agents are complex, since they reflect both ganglionic and postganglionic effects of accumulated ACh on the heart and blood vessels. The predominant effect on the heart from the peripheral action of accumulated ACh is bradycardia, resulting in a fall in cardiac output. Higher doses usually cause a fall in blood pressure, often as a consequence of effects of anticholinesterase agents on the medullary vasomotor centers of the CNS. /Anticholinesterase agents/
