Environmental Fate · 3건

TERRESTRIAL FATE: Based on a classification scheme(1), Koc values of 2,963-57,966 measured in soil(2), indicate that propargite is expected to have slight to no mobility in soil(SRC). Volatilization of propargite from moist soil surfaces is not expected to be an important fate process(SRC) given an estimated Henry's Law constant of 6.4X10-7 atm-cu m/mole(SRC), derived from its vapor pressure of 3X10-7 mm Hg(3) and water solubility of 0.215 mg/L(3). Volatilization from dry soil surfaces is not expected(SRC) based on the vapor pressure of this compound(3). The time for 50% dissipation (DT50) of propargite in soil samples (pH 6-6.9, 1.0-2.55% organic carbon) under aerobic conditions was reported as 50-67 days(3). Hydrolysis in moist soils may also be an important fate process since propagite hydrolyzes quickly under alkaline conditions(2).

AQUATIC FATE: Based on a classification scheme(1), Koc values of 2,963-57,966 measured in soil(2), indicate that propargite is expected to adsorb to suspended solids and sediment(SRC). Volatilization from water surfaces is not expected to be an important environmental fate process(3) based upon an estimated Henry's Law constant of 6.4X10-7 atm-cu m/mole(SRC), derived from its vapor pressure of 3X10-7 mm Hg(4) and water solubility of 0.215 mg/L(4). According to a classification scheme(5), an estimated BCF value of 4890 from a log Kow of 5.7(4) and regression derived equation(6), suggests the potential for bioconcentration in aquatic organisms is very high(SRC). The hydrolysis half-life of propargite at pH 5, 7, and 9 is 120 days, 75 days, and 2.2 days, respectively(2). The time for 50% dissipation(DT50) of propargite in an aqueous photolysis experiment was 6 days and the biodegradation DT50 was 18.3-22.5 days in a sediment/water system(4).

ATMOSPHERIC FATE: According to a model of gas/particle partitioning of semivolatile organic compounds in the atmosphere(1), propargite, which has a vapor pressure of 3X10-7 mm Hg at 25 °C(1) is expected to exist in both the vapor and particulate phases in the ambient atmosphere. Vapor-phase propargite is degraded in the atmosphere by reaction with photochemically-produced hydroxyl radicals and ozone molecules(SRC). The half-life for this reaction in air is estimated to be 6 hours for hydroxyl radicals and 382 days for ozone(SRC), calculated from their respective rate constants of 6.0X10-11 cu cm/molecule-sec and 3X10-20 cu cm/molecule-sec at and 25 °C(SRC) that were derived using a structure estimation method(3). Particulate-phase propargite may be removed from the air by wet or dry deposition(SRC). Propargite may undergo direct photolysis in the environment based upon an aqueous photolysis 50% dissipation time (DT50) of 6 days following exposure to sunlight(2).

Food Survey Values · 1건

Propargite residues on Valencia oranges initially decreased rapidly due to weathering processes but approximately one-third (between 2 and 3 ppm) of the original residues remained after approximately 130 days(1). The remaining residues apparently had migrated into the fruit rind(1). Propargite was identified, not quantified, in the 2000, 2001, 2002, and 2003 FDA Market Basket Survey of domestic and imported food items(2). Propargite was detected in 6 out of 86 apples tested during the 1995-2000 food monitoring study of domestic and imported foods in Japan(3). Propargite was detected in 81 out of 769 domestic apples (max concn 1.6 ppm), and 94 out of 1,062 imported apples (max concn 2.6 ppm)in a US FDA pesticide monitoring study(4).

FIFRA Requirements · 4건

Tolerances are established for residues of the pesticide propargite (2-(p-tert -butylphenoxy) cyclohexyl 2-propynyl sulfite) in or on the following food commodities: [Table#3222]

Tolerances with regional registrations. Tolerances with regional registration, as defined in section 180(n), are established for residues of propargite in or on the following raw agricultural commodities: Corn, sweet, kernal plus cob with husks removed).

The Agency has completed its assessment of the occupational, non-occupational, and ecological risks associated with the use of pesticides containing the active ingredient propargite, as well as a propargite-specific dietary risk assessment. Based on a review of these data and on public comments on the Agency's assessments for the active ingredient propargite, EPA has sufficient information on the human health and ecological effects of propargite to make decisions as part of the tolerance reassessment process under FFDCA and reregistration process under FIFRA, as amended by FQPA. The Agency has determined that propargite products are eligible for reregistration provided that: (i) current data gaps and additional confirmatory data needs are addressed; (ii) the risk mitigation measures outlined in this document are adopted, and (iii) label amendments are made to reflect these measures.

As the federal pesticide law FIFRA directs, EPA is conducting a comprehensive review of older pesticides to consider their health and environmental effects and make decisions about their future use. Under this pesticide reregistration program, EPA examines health and safety data for pesticide active ingredients initially registered before November 1, 1984, and determines whether they are eligible for reregistration. In addition, all pesticides must meet the new safety standard of the Food Quality Protection Act of 1996. Propargite is found on List A, which contains most food use pesticides and consists of the 194 chemical cases (or 350 individual active ingredients) for which EPA issued registration standards prior to FIFRA, as amended in 1988. Case No: 0243; Pesticide type: Insecticide; Registration Standard Date: 09/30/86; Case Status: OPP is reviewing data from the pesticide's producers regarding its human health and/or environmental effects, or OPP is determining the pesticide's eligibility for reregistration and developing the Reregistration Eligibility Decision (RED) document.; Active ingredient (AI): Propargite; Data Call-in (DCI) Date(s): 10/13/95; AI Status: The producers of the pesticide has made commitments to conduct the studies and pay the fees required for reregistration, and are meeting those commitments in a timely manner.

Metabolism/Metabolites · 1건

When 50-mg samples of bulb mites, Rhizoglyphus echinopus (Fumouze and Robin), were placed for 1 hr in glass vials coated with 0.53 mug of radiocarbon-labeled propargite, about 12% (1.27 ug/g) of the acaricide was transferred to the mites. Mites treated with propargite were kept in holding vials and the extent of metabolism was evaluated after 6, 12, 24, and 48 hr. Internal levels of radiocarbon ranged from 14.8 to 17.4% of the dose and were divided about equally between the mite extrat and mite residue fractions. Levels of propargite in the internal extract decreased from 5.9 at 6 hr to 2.5 at 48 hr when expressed as percentage of total recovered radiocarbon and from 61.5 at 6 hr to 29.8 at 48 hr when expressed as relative percentage of radiocarbon in the internal extract. Thus, propargite was degraded slowly by the mites. The metabolites 4-tert-butylphenol and 2-(4-tert-butylphenoxy) cyclohexanol (glycol ether) were present at low levels (< 0.5%). Propargite was degraded in vitro by bulb mite homogenates with the 12,000 pernatant being about four times more active than the corresponding pellet. Exogenous NADPH and glutathione greatly enhanced propargite degradation by the supernatant fraction. However, not all of the degradation in the presence of glutathione was enzymatic; about 15% of the propargite was converted to 4-tert-butylphenol when the acaricide was incubated with cofactor in buffer in the absence of the mite supernatant. In vitro propargite degradation products consisted mainly of unindentified polar metabolites, but low levels of 4-tert-butylphenol and glyol ether also were present.
