The unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbons, such as 2-PENTENE, are generally much more reactive than the alkanes. Strong oxidizers may react vigorously with them. Reducing agents can react exothermically to release gaseous hydrogen. In the presence of various catalysts (such as acids) or initiators, compounds in this class can undergo very exothermic addition polymerization reactions.
/GUIDE 128: FLAMMABLE LIQUIDS (NON-POLAR/WATER-IMMISCIBLE)/ Fire or Explosion: HIGHLY FLAMMABLE: Will be easily ignited by heat, sparks or flames. Vapors may form explosive mixtures with air. Vapors may travel to source of ignition and flash back. Most vapors are heavier than air. They will spread along ground and collect in low or confined areas (sewers, basements, tanks). Vapor explosion hazard indoors, outdoors or in sewers. Those substances designated with a "P" may polymerize explosively when heated or involved in a fire. Runoff to sewer may create fire or explosion hazard. Containers may explode when heated. Many liquids are lighter than water. Substances may be transported hot. /1-Pentene/
/GUIDE 128: FLAMMABLE LIQUIDS (NON-POLAR/WATER-IMMISCIBLE)/ Health: Inhalation or contact with material may irritate or burn skin and eyes. Fire may produce irritating, corrosive and/or toxic gases. Vapors may cause dizziness or suffocation. Runoff from fire control or dilution water may cause pollution. /1-Pentene/
/GUIDE 128: FLAMMABLE LIQUIDS (NON-POLAR/WATER-IMMISCIBLE)/ Public Safety: CALL Emergency Response Telephone Number ... . As an immediate precautionary measure, isolate spill or leak area for at least 50 meters (150 feet) in all directions. Keep unauthorized personnel away. Stay upwind. Keep out of low areas. Ventilate closed spaces before entering. /1-Pentene/
/GUIDE 128: FLAMMABLE LIQUIDS (NON-POLAR/WATER-IMMISCIBLE)/ Protective Clothing: Wear positive pressure self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). Structural firefighters' protective clothing will only provide limited protection. /1-Pentene/

0 - Materials that, under emergency conditions, would offer no hazard beyond that of ordinary combustible materials.
4 - Materials that rapidly or completely vaporize at atmospheric pressure and normal ambient temperature or that are readily dispersed in air and burn readily.
0 - Materials that in themselves are normally stable, even under fire conditions.
SRP: At the time of review, criteria for land treatment or burial (sanitary landfill) disposal practices are subject to significant revision. Prior to implementing land disposal of waste residue (including waste sludge), consult with environmental regulatory agencies for guidance on acceptable disposal practices.
TERRESTRIAL FATE: Based on a classification scheme(1), an estimated Koc value of 81(SRC), determined from a structure estimation method(2), indicates that trans-2-pentene is expected to have a high mobility in soil(SRC). Volatilization of trans-2-pentene from moist soil surfaces is expected to be an important fate process based on the estimated Henry's Law constant of 0.32 atm-cu m/mole(SRC), using a fragment constant estimation method(3). The potential for volatilization of trans-2-pentene from dry soil surfaces may exist based on a vapor pressure of 506 mm Hg(4). trans-2-Pentene's linear, relatively low molecular weight, hydrocarbon structure suggests that biodegradation in soil is expected to be an important fate process(5).
AQUATIC FATE: Based on a classification scheme(1), an estimated Koc value of 81(SRC) determined from a structure estimation method(2), indicates that trans-2-pentene is not expected to adsorb to suspended solids and sediment in water. Volatilization from water surfaces is expected based upon an estimated Henry's Law constant of 0.32 atm-cu m/mole(SRC), developed using a fragment constant estimation method(4). Using this Henry's Law constant and an estimation method(3), volatilization half-lives for trans-2-pentene from a model river and model lake are calculated to be 1 hr and 80 hrs, respectively(SRC). According to a classification scheme(5), an estimated BCF of 19(SRC), from an estimated log Kow of 2.6(6) and a regression derived equation(7), suggests the potential for bioconcentration in aquatic organisms is low. trans-2-Pentene's linear, relatively low molecular weight, hydrocarbon structure suggests that biodegradation in soil and water is expected to be an important fate process(8).
ATMOSPHERIC FATE: According to a model of gas/particle partitioning of semivolatile organic compounds in the atmosphere(1), trans-2-pentene, which has a vapor pressure of 506 mm Hg at 25 °C(2), is expected to exist solely as a vapor in the ambient atmosphere. Vapor-phase trans-2-pentene is degraded in the atmosphere by reaction with photochemically-produced hydroxyl radicals(SRC); the half-life for this reaction in air is estimated to be 6 hrs(SRC), calculated from its rate constant of 66.9E-011 cu cm/molecule-sec at 25 °C(3).The rate constant for the vapor-phase reaction of trans-2-pentene with ozone has been measured as 3.15X10-16 cu cm/molecule-sec at 25 °C(4). This corresponds to an atmospheric half-life of about 1 hr at an atmospheric concentration of 7X10+11 molecules per cu m(4).
Petroleum distillate poisoning may cause nausea, vomiting, cough, pulmonary irritation progressing to pulmonary edema, bloody sputum, and bronchial pneumonia. At high amounts, central nervous system depression may also occur, with symptoms such as weakness, dizziness, slow and shallow respiration, unconsciousness, and convulsions. Petroleum distillates are also irritating to the skin. (A594)
Moped exhuast was monitored for C2-C8 hydrocarbons in February 1993 in Goteborg, Sweden; trans-2-pentene was detected at a concn of 0.04 % by weight in alkylate-based fuel and 0.37% by weight in reformate-based fuel(1). Motor vehicle emissions were sampled in canisters beside a roadway in a tunnel-like underpass, located in Atlanta, GA, during periods of heavy traffic from 8/20 to 8/27/90; trans-2-pentene was detected at an avg concn of 0.75 ppbC(2). trans-2-Pentene was detected at an avg concn of 0.3 % w/w in compositions of the exhausts from 67 vehicles in on-the-road conditions and driven through an urban driving cycle on a chassis dyanometer(3).
Using a structure estimation method based on molecular connectivity indices(1), the Koc for trans-2-pentene can be estimated to be about 81(SRC). According to a classification scheme(2), this estimated Koc value suggests that trans-2-pentene is expected to have a high mobility in soil.
URBAN/SUBURBAN: In air samples collected in Los Angeles, California, in 1981, trans-2-pentene was detected at concns ranging from 2-7 ppbv(1). Trans-2-pentene was detected in ambient air collected in Washington, DC in 1991 at a maximum concn of 0.96 ppbv(2). In ambient air samples collected in Atlanta, Georgia in 1992, trans-2-pentene was detected 30% of the time with concns between 0.1 and 0.15 ppbC(3). In ambient air samples collected in Tulsa, Oklahoma, trans-2-pentene was present at a maximum concn of 17 ppbC(4). RURAL/REMOTE: In ambient air samples collected in the Smokey Mountains and Colorado, trans-2-pentene was present at a maximum concn of 0.8 ppbC in the Smokey Mountain air and not detected in Colorado air(4).
The production of hydrocarbon mixtures containing trans-2-pentene from natural gasoline(1) and the subsequent use of the hydrocarbons as fuel may result in the release of trans-2-pentene to the environment through various waste streams(SRC).
