일반 설명

Captan is a white solid dissolved in a liquid carrier. Captan is a water emulsifiable liquid. Captan can cause illness by inhalation, skin absorption and/or ingestion. The primary hazard of Captan is that Captan poses a threat to the environment. In case of release immediate steps should be taken to limit its spread to the environment. Since Captan is a liquid Captan can easily penetrate the soil to contaminate groundwater. Captan is used as a fungicide.

유해성 요약
Captan is a fungicide used on fruits, vegetables, and ornamentals. Acute (short-term) dermal exposure to captan may cause dermatitis and conjunctivitis in humans. Ingestion of large quantities of captan may cause vomiting and diarrhea in humans. Captan was found to be carcinogenic in one strain of mice exposed in their diet, causing tumors of the duodenum. In mice exposed by either gavage (experimentally placing the chemical in the stomach) or injection, an increased incidence of tumors was not observed. EPA has classified captan as a Group B2, probable human carcinogen. The thiophthalimides include captan, captafol and folpetno systemic poisonings in humans have been reported[EPA Pesticides] Captan is an agricultural fungicide that has caused occupational allergic contact dermatitis usually after airborne exposure. [Marks, p. 267] Allergic contact dermatitis also reported in hairdressers, painters, polishers, and varnishers[Kanerva, p. 1765] In high-dose reproductive animal studies, captan causes testicular damage and fetal losses. It is a possible teratogen. [Frazier, p. 232-4] Not teratogenic in ratsTeratogenic in hamsters at a single dose of >750 mg/kg on day 7 or 8 of gestation[ACGIH]

FIFRA 요건Tolerances are established for residues of the fungicide, captan (N-trichloromethylthio-4-cyclohexene-1,2-dicarboximide) in or on the following commodities: [Table#2541]Tolerances are established for the combined residues of the fungicide, captan (N-trichloromethylthio-4-cyclohexene-1,2-dicarboximide) and its metabolite 1,2,3,6-tetrahydrophthalimide (THPI), measured at THPI, in or on the following commodities: [Table#2542]The Reregistration Eligibility Decision (RED) document for captan was completed in September 1999 and a public comment period for the RED followed. The Environmental Protection Agency reviewed the public comments submitted and responded in a October 30, 2003 Captan Response to Comments document. Further, as a result of its review of the public comments the Agency is amending the 1999 Captan RED. ... The Agency has determined that products containing captan are eligible for reregistration provided the risk mitigation as outlined in the following items 1 through 8, the attached label table, and the 1999 Captan RED are implemented.Based on the reviews of the generic data for the active ingredient captan, the Agency has sufficient information on the health effects of captan and on its potential for causing adverse effects in fish, wildlife, and the environment. The Agency has determined that captan products, labeled and used as specified in this Reregistration Eligibility Decision, will not pose unreasonable risks of adverse effects to humans or the environment. Therefore, the Agency concludes that products containing captan are eligible for reregistration, subject to the terms and conditions of this RED, except for those with uses on turf and aerially-applied wettable powder formulations. Products applied to turf at sod farms or golf courses are eligible for reregistrationuses at all other turf sites are being voluntarily cancelled. Wettable powder formulations that are applied aerially are eligible for reregistration, provided either: 1) the products are packaged in water soluble packagingor 2) the application rates are reduced to a level that is no higher than 1.2 lb ai/A.As the federal pesticide law FIFRA directs, EPA is conducting a comprehensive review of older pesticides to consider their health and environmental effects and make decisions about their continued use. Under this pesticide reregistration program, EPA examines newer health and safety data for pesticide active ingredients initially registered before November 1, 1984, and determines whether the use of the pesticide does not pose unreasonable risk in accordance to newer safety standards, such as those described in the Food Quality Protection Act of 1996. Captan is found on List A, which contains most pesticides that are used on foods and, hence, have a high potential for human exposure. List A consists of the 194 chemical cases (or 350 individual active ingredients) for which EPA issued registration standards prior to FIFRA '88. Case No: 0120Pesticide type: fungicideRegistration Standard Date: 03/06/86Case Status: OPP is reviewing data from the pesticide's producers regarding its human health and/or environmental effects, or OPP is determining the pesticide's eligibility for reregistration and developing the RED (Reregistration Eligibility Decision) document.Active ingredient (AI): captanData Call-in (DCI) Date(s): 03/03/95, 10/13/95AI Status: The producers of the pesticide have made commitments to conduct the studies and pay the fees required for reregistration, and are meeting those commitments in a timely manner.

체내 부담Captan was detected in personal air samples obtained from an inhabitant of 4 of 9 homes in Jacksonville, Florida during August 1985concentrations of captan in one personal air sample from a person living in a high-use house were 0.019 and 0.028 ug/cu m for two different days(1).
Cancer Sites[in animals: duodenal tumors]
상호 작용Carcinogenic and co-carcinogenic potential of captan following topical exposure was determined in female Swiss albino mice. Tumor-initiating properties of captan were examined in seven study groups: untreated controlscaptan (single dose) plus 12-o-tetradecanoylphorbol-1 3-acetate (TPA)captan (multiple dose) plus TPA7,12-dimethylbenzanthracene (DMBA) plus TPAcaptan (single dose) plus acetonecaptan (multiple dose) plus acetoneand dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) plus TPA. Tumor-promoting activity was assessed in six of these groups, and complete carcinogenic activity was assessed in five groups: Untreated controlsbenzo(a)pyreneand acetone. Total treatment period was 52 weeks. Surviving mice were sacrificed at end of 1 year. Topical application of captan was found to cause initiation of mouse skin in a two-stage cancer initiation-promotion model. While single application of captan was insufficient to initiate skin tumor development in most mice, multiple exposure to captan resulted in cumulative incidence of 21 tumors, and DMBA plus TPA-treated mice had 90 tumors detected. In this report, captan failed to demonstrate any tumor-promoting or complete carcinogenic activity.

환경 거동TERRESTRIAL FATE: Based on a classification scheme(1), Koc values of 33-600(2), indicate that captan is expected to have very high to moderate mobility in soil(SRC). However, in field studies at 6 different sites, captan was reported as relatively immobile to slightly mobile in soil(3). Volatilization of captan from moist soil surfaces is not expected to be an important fate process(SRC) given a Henry's Law constant of 7.0X10-9 atm-cu m/mole(SRC), based upon its vapor pressure, 9.0X10-8 mm Hg(2), and water solubility, 5.1 mg/L(4). Captan is not expected to volatilize from dry soil surfaces(SRC) based upon its vapor pressure(2). (14)C-labeled captan was degraded 25% in 8 weeks using a Mexico-Putnam silt loam representative of claypan soils in north Missouri(5). In field studies using sterile and unsterile soil at pH 7 and 50% moisture content, captan, applied to a sandy loam, clay loam and sandy loam soil amended with peat had a reported half-life of 12-20, 5.5-5.9 and 7.7-8.9 days, respectively(6).ECOSYSTEM: The disposition of (14)C-labeled captan was examined as a seed-protectant coating in a terrestrial microcosm chamber in comparison to a reference cmpd dieldrin. The terrestrial microcosm chamber contained a synthetic soil medium, agric crops, numerous invertebrates, and a gravid gray-tailed vole. By 45 days postplanting, total soil residues (parent + metabolites + bound residues) had declined from 3 ppm to 0.26 ppm, while parent residues became undetectable.AQUATIC FATE: Based on a classification scheme(1), Koc values of 33-600(2), indicate that captan is expected to adsorb to suspended solids and sediment(SRC). Volatilization from water surfaces is not expected(3) based upon a Henry's Law constant of 7.0X10-9 atm-cu m/mole(SRC), derived from its vapor pressure, 9.0X10-8 mm Hg(2), and water solubility, 5.1 mg/L(4). Captan is rapidly hydrolyzed at environmental pH values of 5 to 9half-lives of 18.8 hrs, 4.9 hrs, and 8.3 min were measured in water at pH values of 5, 7, and 9, respectively(5). Based on this rapid hydrolysis rate(5), biodegradation in water is not expected to be an important fate process(SRC). According to a classification scheme(6), a BCF of 126 in bluegill sunfish(7), suggests the bioconcentration in aquatic organisms is moderate(SRC).ATMOSPHERIC FATE: According to a model of gas/particle partitioning of semivolatile organic compounds in the atmosphere(1), captan, which has a vapor pressure of 9.0X10-8 mm Hg at 25 °C(2), is expected to exist in both the vapor and particulate phases in the ambient atmosphere. Vapor-phase captan is degraded in the atmosphere by reaction with photochemically-produced hydroxyl radicals and ozone(SRC)the half-lives for these reactions in air are estimated to be 4.4 and 1.4 hours(SRC), calculated from respective rate constants of 8.8X10-11 and 2.0X10-16 cu cm/molecule-sec at 25 °C(SRC) that were derived using a structure estimation method(3). Particulate-phase captan may be removed from the air by wet and dry deposition(SRC). Captan does not contain chromophores that absorb at wavelengths >290 nm(4) and, therefore, is not expected to be susceptible to direct photolysis by sunlight(SRC).

Captan was detected during the FDA's program for monitoring pesticide residues from 1978 to 1982 (49,877 samples)(2) and 1982 to 1986 (49,055 samples)(3). Captan was detected in 100 of 13,980 food samples collected by state food laboratories in 10 states during fiscal year (FY) 1988one sample of the 100 detects was considered to contain captan at concentrations high enough for regulatory concern(4). Captan was detected in 145 of 13,085 food samples during a similar study conducted in FY 19895 samples contained captan at concentrations high enough for regulatory concern(4). Captan was listed as one of the pesticide residues detected in a 1992 U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) survey of domestic and imported foods(5).Domestic commodities were tested by Agriculture Canada from April 1989 through December 1991captan was detected in 100 of 13,230 samples (47 of 431 strawberries11 of 30 grapes, 5 of 42 fresh peaches, 4 of 324 beans, 4 of 74 blueberries, 27 of 843 apples, 1 of 210 carrots, 1 of 84 mushrooms) with 5 of these 100 samples containing concentrations which would result in a violation(1). Similarly, imported commodities were tested at the same timecaptan was detected in 201 of 7823 samples (3 of 341 fresh lettuce, 17 of 48 strawberries130 of 449 grapes, 3 of 8 raspberries, 12 of 808 apples, 23 of 372 carrots, 2 of 17 fresh nectarine, 4 of 56 green onion, 4 of 481 fresh peppers, 3 of 19 fresh plums) with 28 of these 201 samples containing concentrations which would result in a violation(1). Of 2338 samples of Ontario, Canada-produced fruits and vegetables, collected between 1991 and 1995, 653 contained captan at <0.01 to >10 ug/g19 of the 653 positive samples had concentrations of captan which were high enough to violate maximum residue limits set by Health Canada(2). Captan was found in 3 out of 5 of the regional Canadian food composites in the fruit food group at 10-20 ppb(3). Captan was detected at 8 and 25 ng/g in samples of Katerini apples and Italia pears, respectively, grown in Greece(4). Captan was detected in 3 of 291 vegetable samples (Chinese cabbage) and 9 of 106 fruit samples (apple) in agricultural products monitored in Hyogo Prefecture, Japan, for fiscal years 1995-1999(5). Captan residues in vegetables and fruits monitored in Sao Paulo City, Brazil, 1994-2001, were 0.01-14.64 mg/kg with a mean of 1.74 mg/kg270 of 2223 samples (carrot, cucumber, grape, guava, melon, papaya, peach, strawberry, tomato) were positive with 4 violating the allowable limit(6). Captan was not detected (detection limit 0.06 ug/uL) in 15 natural isotonic coconut water samples purchased in Brazil(7).Captan was detected in the following Belgian food commodities(1):[Table#2545]

독성 요약The CIR Expert Panel concludes that the available data are insufficient to support the safety of Captan as used in cosmetics.Ingredients for which the data are insufficient and their use in cosmetics is not supportedIDENTIFICATION AND USE: Captan is a white solid. Pure captan is odorless. The technical product is an amorphous powder which is colorless to beige with a pungent odor. Captan is a fungicide used to control diseases of many fruit and ornamental and vegetable crops. It is also used as a spray, root dip or seed treatment to protect young plants against rot and damping off. Captan is also used as a fungicide in wall paper pastes and in hormone rooting powders. HUMAN EXPOSURE AND TOXICITY: Potential symptoms of overexposure are irritation of eyes, skin, upper respiratory systemblurred visiondermatitis, skin sensitizationdyspneadiarrhea, vomiting. Dermatitis and conjunctivitis have been noted. Captan has caused allergic dermatitis and eye irritation in man. Accidents among adult farm workers and secondary exposure of their children can occur. Common human exposure is by the oral, dermal and inhalation routes. In adult male with occupational exposure to captan, who had persistent erythema, itching and desquamation of the face and backs of the hand, skin testing revealed reaction to captan. Addition of 10 ug/mL captan for five hours to human embryonic lung cells L-132 resulted in a 50% reduction of DNA synthesis and a 40% increase in chromosomal breaks, mainly of the chromatid type. Captan induced unscheduled DNA synthesis in SV-40 transformed human VA-4 cells at concentrations ranging from 0.001 to 1 mM, with or without uninduced rat liver microsomal preparations. Negative results were obtained when human lung fibroblasts were exposed to 0.003-1 mM captan with or without uninduced mouse liver microsomal preparation. A small increase in unscheduled DNA synthesis was observed in human lymphocytes treated with 5 ug/mL captan (91.5 % pure). ANIMAL STUDIES: Evidence from animal experiments indicates that ingestion of large quantities may produce gastrointestinal effects such as diarrhea and vomiting. Studies in mice but not in rats have demonstrated a carcinogenic poten
