To a 2 gallon bottle was charged 1000 g (1.707 mol) of a 70% methanol solution of ethyltriphenylphosphonium acetate.acetic acid complex followed by the addition of 204.4 g (1.622 mol) oxalic acid dihydrate. The mixture was mixed until all of the oxalic acid had dissolved and then about 31.5 g of methanol was added to give a resultant solution of about 50 wt. % ethyltriphenylphosphonium oxalate.
