Reaction Steps

A mixture of the compound obtained in Example 5A (1.0 g), phenyl isothiocyanate (0.31 g) and tetrahydrofuran (20 ml) was stirred at room temperature for 14 hours, after which it was concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was subjected to silica gel column chromatography and eluted with ethyl acetate-hexane-methanol (20:20:1, v/v) to yield ethyl 2-(N,N-diethylaminomethyl)-4-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)-7-phenylthiocarbamoyl-5,6,7,8-tetrahydrothieno[2,3-b:5,4-c']dipyridine-3-carboxylate (for structural formula, see below) (1.03 g, 80%), which was then recrystallized from ethyl acetate-hexane to yield colorless crystals having a melting point of 104 to 106° C. ##STR51##
