Nicotinoyl chloride hydrochloride (0.18 g) was added to a solution of the compound (0.29 g) obtained in Example 18B in pyridine (4 ml), the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 1 hour, poured over water and extracted with ethyl acetate. The ethyl acetate layer was washed with water, dried (MgSO4) and concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was subjected to silica gel column chromatography and eluted with ethyl acetate to yield 7-benzyl-3-chloro-4-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)-2-(nicotinoylaminomethyl)-5,6,7,8-tetrahydrothieno[2,3-b:5,4-c']dipyridine (0.2 g, 51%), which was then recrystallized from ethyl acetate-hexane to yield colorless prismatic crystals having a melting point of 124 to 125° C.
