1.5 0 g of 1-benzyl 3-tert-butyl 2-ethyl (1S,2R)-1-hydroxy-1,2,3-propanetricarboxylate in 30 ml of chloroform was stirred with 2.35 g of the Dess-Martin reagent (periodinane) at room temperature for 1.5 hours. The reaction solution was poured into a mixture of saturated aqueous sodium hydrogencarbonate and saturated aqueous sodium thiosulfate and extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic layer was washed with saturated aqueous sodium chloride and then dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate. The desiccant was filtered off, and the solvent was distilled off under reduced pressure. The residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography [hexane/ethyl acetate=9/1] to give 1.37 g of the title compound as a colorless oily substance
