4-Amino-3-methoxy-3′-nitro-biphenyl was then stirred with boron tribromide in dichloromethane to give 4-amino-3′-nitro-biphenyl-3-ol as an orange solid: mp 175-176° C.; 1H-NMR (DMSO-d6) δ 9.3 (s, 1H), 8.25 (bs, 1H), 8.05 (d, 1H, J=8.33 Hz), 7.95 (d, 1H, J=8.33 Hz), 7.66 (t, 1H, J=7.5 Hz), 7.06-7.02 (m, 2H), 6.70 (d, 1H, J=8.33 Hz), 4.9 (s, 2H); MS (ES) m/z 229 ([M−H]−, 100%).
