Procedure
In 30 mL of 90% aqueous solution of methanol is dissolved 5.90 g of methyl 6-fluoro-7-methoxybenzo-[b]thiophene-5-carboxylate, to which is added 1.18 g of sodium hydroxide. The mixture is stirred at ambient temperature for 6 hours. The reaction mixture is concentrated under reduced pressure, the residue is mixed with water and hexane, and the aqueous layer is separated. The aqueous layer is adjusted to pH 1 with 6 mol/L hydrochloric acid, and the deposited crystal is collected by filtration, washed with water and dried. Thus, 5.20 g of 6-fluoro-7-methoxybenzo[b]thiophene-5-carboxylic acid is obtained as a light brown-colored crystalline product.
