To a stirred mixture of tert-butyl [1-(benzyloxymethyl)tricyclo[3.3.1.03,7]non-3-yl]carbamate (1.0 g, 2.8 mmol) obtained in step V in MeOH (11 mL), Pd/C (10%, 0.2 g) was added. The H2 pressure was then applied with the balloon for 2 h. The reaction mixture was filtered through a pad of celite and the filtrate was concentrated under reduced pressure to obtain tert-butyl [1-(hydroxymethyl)tricyclo[3.3.1.03,7]non-3-yl]carbamate as a viscous liquid (0.7 g) in 95% yield. m/z (M+1) 268; 1H NMR (CDCl3) 300 MHz δ 4.74 (s (br), 1H), 3.45 (s, 2H), 2.50-2.40 (m, 1H), 2.40-2.33 (m, 1H), 2.05-1.87 (m, 4H), 1.80 (dd, J=2.4, 10.3 Hz, 1H), 1.65 (dd, J=3.0, 10.0 Hz, 1H), 1.54-1.40 (m, 3H), 1.45 (s, 9H), 1.37 (dd, J=3.1, 10.0 Hz, 1H).
