3-(1-Methylindol-3-yl)-4-[3-(2-morpholin-4-ylethyloxy)phenyl]-1-methylpyrrole-2,5-dione (0.22 g, 0.5 mmol) was dissolved in EtOH (10 mL) and a solution of KOH (1.5 g) in H2O (2.5 mL) was added. After the reaction mixture was refluxed for 3 h, it was cooled to room temperature, followed by evaporation of EtOH. The residue was acidified with aq. HCl to pH=4.5. The product was extracted with EtOAc and the EtOAc layer was dried over sodium sulfate and concentrated to give 3-(1-methylindol-3-yl)-4-[3-(2-morpholin-4-ylethyloxy)phenyl]furan-2,5-dione which was in the next step without further purification.
