Procedure
Methyl 4-(3,4-dichlorobenzyl)-2-formylfuro[3,2-b]pyrrole-5-carboxylate (0.7 g) was dissolved in pyridine (7 mL). To this was added hydroxyammonium chloride (0.23 g) and reaction heated at 90° C. for 30 min. Acetic anhydride (2.5 mL) was added dropwise and reaction heated at 90° C. for a further 2 hours. The reaction was quenched by pouring onto ice/water, and the resulting precipitate was filtered off and dried in vacuo to give a pale brown solid (0.69 g, 100%), NMR d(CDCl3) 3.85 (3H, s), 5.6 (2H, s), 6.85 (2H, d), 6.95 (1H, dd), 7.2 (1H, d), 7.4 (1H, d); M/z (−) 349 (M-H+), 347, 189.
