A mixture of 3-(4-tert-butylphenyl)-1-(1H-imidazol4-yl)-propan-1-ol (2.0 g) and methanesulfonic acid (30 ml) is heated at 60° C. for 5 minutes. The reaction is then quenched by pouring it into ice-water solution. The acidic solution is made basic with ammmonium hydroxide solution, and extracted with ethyl acetate. The combined organic layers are washed with water, dried with sodium sulfate, and evaporated to dryness under reduced pressure. The crude product is purified by flash chromatography by eluting with methylene chloride-methanol as eluent. The product is crystallized from ethyl acetate. The yield is 220 mg.
