To a solution of rac-2-cyclopentylsulfanyl-2-(3,4-dichloro-phenyl)-N-thiazol-2-yl-acetamide (Example 10; 34 mg, 0.088 mmol) in methanol (2 mL) was added a solution of sodium periodate (34 mg, 0.16 mmol) in water (1 mL) and the mixture was stirred at 25° C. After 6 h, the precipitate was filtered off and washed with dichloromethane (15 mL). The organic layer was set aside and the aqueous layer was extracted with dichioromethane (3×10 mL). The combined organic layers were dried over sodium sulfate, filtered and evaporated under reduced pressure. Chromatography of the residue (Biotage Flash 12M column, 50 /50 hexanes/ethyl acetate) afforded rac-2-cyclopentanesulfinyl-2-(3,4-dichloro-phenyl)-N-thiazol-2-yl-acetamide (23 mg, 66% yield) as a colorless oil: EI- HRMS m/e calculated for C16H16N2O2S2Cl2 (M+) 402.0030, found 402.0035.
