Procedure

A mixture of 4-chloro-2-(10-fluoro-1-oxo-3,4,6,7,8,9-hexahydropyrazino[1,2-a]indol-2(1H)-yl)nicotinaldehyde 134c (800 mg, 2.31 mmol), NaBH4 (263 mg, 6.92 mmol), and methanol (50 mL) was stirred at 0° C. for 1 h. Then the reaction mixture was quenched with water (30 mL) and concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was extracted with dichloromethane (2×30 mL) and the combined dichloromethane extract was concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was purified by silica-gel chromatography eluting with 5:1 petroleum ether/ethyl acetate to afford 231a (650 mg, 81%) as a yellow solid. MS-ESI: [M+H]+ 340.1
