2-(2′,3′-Dichloro-[1,1′-biphenyl]-3-yl)propanedioic acid 1,3-diethyl ester (i.e. the product of Step B, 0.30 g, 0.79 mmol) was added to 2% aqueous sodium hydroxide (5 mL), and the reaction mixture was heated at 70° C. for 20 min. The reaction mixture was cooled, quenched with 6 N aqueous hydrochloric acid, and extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic layer was separated, washed with brine, dried over sodium sulfate, and concentrated under reduced pressure to yield the title compound (0.20 g).
