To a slurry of 2-mercaptopyrimidine-4,6-diol (55.6 g) in water (735 ml) was added sodium acetate (47.4 g) with stirring forming a complete solution over 20 minutes. A solution of 2,3-difluorobenzyl bromide (80 g) in acetonitrile (73.5 ml) was then added dropwise over 15 minutes and the resulting mixture heated at 40° C. with stirring for 18 h. After cooling to ambient temperature the resulting precipitate was then filtered and washed with H2O (1 L) before drying in vacuo at 100° C. to afford the subtitle compound as a cream solid. Yield: 101.5 g.
