1.5 equivalents of sodium methoxide (30% in methanol) were added to 7.79 g of thiourea in 150 ml of absolute ethanol. A solution of 30 g of 2-(3-methyl-benzoylamino)malonic acid diethyl ester in 100 ml of absolute ethanol was added dropwise, and the reaction mixture was stirred at 60° C. for 2 h. Then the mixture was cooled to 0° C. for 30 min, and the precipitate was filtered off with suction, washed and dried. 28.6 g of the crude title compound were obtained.
