2.9 ml of methyl fluorosulfonate were added, whilst ice-cooling, to a solution of 8.95 g of 4-(4-methoxybenzylthio)-1-methylpiperidine dissolved in 300 ml of dry methylene chloride, and the mixture was stirred at the same temperature for 20 minutes and then at room temperature for 2.5 hours. At the end of this time, the solvent was removed by distillation under reduced pressure, and the residue was washed repeatedly by decantation with diethyl ether and dried under reduce pressure, to afford 12.76 g of the title compound as a colorless powder.
