Reaction Steps
1.5 g of sodium borohydride were added, whilst ice-cooling, to a mixture of 1.2 g of 2-methoxyethyl α-{2-[4-(2,4-dioxothiazolidin-5-ylmethyl)-phenoxymethyl]-2,5,7,8-tetramethyl-4-oxochroman -6-yloxy}acetate (prepared as described in Example 35) and 20 ml of methanol, and the mixture was stirred for 60 minutes. The reaction mixture was then poured into ice-water, neutralized with 10% w/v aqueous hydrochloric acid, and then extracted with ethyl acetate. The extract was washed with water and dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate. The solvent was distilled off under reduced pressure to give the title compound as a pale yellow powder.
