A mixture of 4.8 parts of ethyl 4-[2-[1-(phenylmethyl)-4-piperidinyl]ethoxy]benzoate (Z)-2-butenedioate(1:1) and 120 parts of ethanol was hydrogenated at normal pressure and at 50° C. with 2 parts of palladium-on-charcoal catalyst 10%. After the calculated amount of hydrogen was taken up, the catalyst was filtered off and the filtrate was evaporated. The residue was crystallized from 2-propanol, yielding 4.5 parts (100%) of ethyl 4-[2-(4-piperidinyl)ethoxy]benzoate butanedioate(1:1); mp. 146.7° C. (int. 51).
