The synthesis of this acid is in accordance with the following scheme, in which 1-hexene (22) is the alkene starting material which is reacted with methyl glyoxalate to form methyl 2-hydroxy-4-octenoate (23) and then hydrolysed to form the free acid (21): ##STR13##
