Finely powdered potassium nitrate (92 mg, 0.9 mmol) was added to a stirred and ice-cooled solution of 7,8-dihydroxythiazolo[5,4-f]quinoxaline (0.20 g, 0.9 mmol) in 5 ml of conc. sulfuric acid. The mixture was stirred at 0° C. for 30 min, then at room temperature for 4 h, and finally poured into ice/water. The resulting precipitate was isolated by filtration, washed with water, and dried giving 0.15 g (62%) of the nitro compound; m.p. >360° C., IR (KBr): 1680 cm-1 ; 1H-NMR (DMSO-d6): 8.06 (s, 1H, ArH), 9.53 (s, 1H, ArH), 12.23 (broad s, 1H, OH), 12.76 (broad s, 1H, OH).
