Procedure
A solution of ethyl, 4-cyano-4-[6-(1H-imidazol-1-yl)pyrid-3-yl]-4-N-morpholino butyrate (2.34 g, 6.34 mmol) in 14 ml of acetic acid containing 0.9 ml of water is heated to reflux for 1 day. The solvent is removed and the residue is dissolved in CHCl3 and extracted with saturated aqueous NaHCO3 solution. The organic layer is then separated, dried (Na2SO4) and evaporated to give crude ethyl 4-[6-(1H-imidazol-1-yl)pyrid-3-yl]-4-oxo-butanoate. Saponification of the ester in aqueous Na2CO3 at 23° C. generates the desired product used in the next step without further purification.
